Slade leads Dogs
home.
By Doug Robertson.
A workmanlike Central District cruised to a comfortable,
if lack-lustre, 68-point victory over a rattled Glenelg
at Brighton Rd yesterday.
The Dogs were never threatened and after a commanding
opening term with the aid of a strong wind, Central did
as it pleased in a contest that descended into a near
farce.
Central had it so easy at times it had the luxury of
over-using the ball repeatedly without getting hurt by a
hard-hitting but woefully skilled opposition.
Glenelg had the amazing statistic of having just three
players who had more than 15 possessions for the
afternoon, while the Dogs 10 with more than 15 disposals.
Central's midfielder Mike Stevens (19 disposals), Simon
Arnott (18) and Rick Macgowen (21) were tagged all day,
but still managed to influence the game.
Chris (21) and James Gowans (21) out-worked their
opposition midfielders and unheralded Matthew Slade
belted the Tigers' small men with 19 damaging touches and
four goals.
Central set out to win in the clinches and to prevent the
Tigers from running into form. Central let lowly North
Adelaide do just that 2 weeks ago and the Dog's coach
Alistair Clarkson refused to allow that to happen again.
"We know what sides are capable of if you don't
apply strong pressure for the whole game and that was
right at the forefront of the player's minds," he
said.
"When we approach the game in a physical manner...
we were terrific.
The Dogs were in total control in the second term,
pushing into the wind. Central's pressure in close and
constant running forced Glenelg to shuffle its line up
consistently.
Glenelg put up a bit of a surge several times, usually
through Martin Mellody, Ben Moore, Simon Hele and Matthew
Golding, after being shifted into the ruck from
full-forward for the second half, but the working Dogs
gave Glenelg so little time to execute a move the
delivery was usually sloppy. Glenelg never looked capable
of taking control.
The Bays missed marks, miskicked, mishandled, misdirected
and messed up just about every thing possible.
It had kicked only 5 goals by three-quarter time, which
exposed massive problems with their ability and, more
importantly, hinted at a low level of confidence which
will be much more difficult to shake. Coach Brenton Honor
had his charges in a "players-only" meeting for
more than 30 minutes after the game.
