Brogan inspires
Panthers.
By David
Burtenshaw.
South Adelaide pumped more life back into its season with
its third consecutive win, a 59 point belting of Glenelg
yesterday at Brighton road.
Inspired by another magnificant game in the ruck by the
unlucky Dean Brogan, the Panthers took command with a
stunning six-goal blitz in the second quarter.
Glenelg was left flat-footed and frustrated. And although
the Tigers tried hard in the second half, they are
drifting further and further away from their finals
dream, having banked just two wins from nine games.
South coach Greg Anderson was pleased with the team's
response to Glenelg's aggressive start and hopes the side
can show similar form against the top teams.
"They hit us pretty hard early", he said.
"It was great we took all they had to giveand we
just kept on moving forward and settled down the
quickest. I thought we made most of the initiative all
day".
None were better, however, than Brogan , left out of Port
Adelaide's AFL side this week after making an impressive
debut last Sunday.
"He came back raring to go," Anderson said. The
former NBL basketballer dominated the centre square and
finished with 28 possesions, 10 marks and 23 hit-outs and
also kicked three goals while resting in a forward
pocket.
When Brogan did take a break, there was no let-up for
Glenelg, with Simon Crawshay also in good touch. The ruck
dominance gave South a head start at ground level and
there was no shortage of midfielders getting their hands
on the ball.
Clay Sampson ran hard all day to rack up 31 touches,
centreman David Morgan was the main supplier inside the
packs, and captain Kym Koster, Jon Hassal and Phil Murton
kept pumping the ball forward. Kym Cobb and Matthew
Bishop led a rebounding set of defenders, only bad
kicking let down Ian Perrie at centre half-foward, and
Mark Demasi bagged three goals in the first half.
Glenelg made a reasonable start, despite Brogan's centre
square dominance, and led by eight points half-way
through the first term.
Wingman Matthew Shir picked up some early touches and the
opening goal, Sudjai Cook drifted down from defence to
kick from 50m and then Cameron Venables kicked one from
the goal line after a series of handballs.
Midfielder Phil Mckenzie (37 possesions) was probably
Glenelg's best ahead of James Byrne, and rover Matthew
Bode made a promising come back from a broken wrist,
kicking 2.4.
But another Crow, 2000 draftee laurence Angwin, appeared
to seriously hurt his right shoulder in the second term.
