Bloods run riot
By Paul Kermode.
West Adelaide has taken a giant leap towards playing in
this year's major round, thrashing a struggling Glenelg
at Adelaide Oval yesterday.
The 66-point victory gives the Bloods a three game buffer
over sixth-placed South Adelaide with nine games
remaining-an equation that should ensure that the club
returns to the major round after missing last season.
West can take another significant step towards that goal
next week when it plays the Panthers at home.
Led by a miserly defence that conceded just two goals
when there was some heat in the game during the first
half, a dominant midfield and an eight goal haul from
Adam Richardson, West simply had too many answers for the
Tigers, who are now only one win off bottom place.
The contest was over at half-time, with the Bloods 66
points ahead and in complete control. The fact that the
margin was exactly the same at the end of the game was a
source of frustration for West coach Ian Borchard, and a
reason he will not yet declare his side has secured a
spot in the five.
"I'm happy with the result, we set it up well, but
we've got to play longer and harder over the whole four
quarters and that's our same old problem'" he said.
"What I reckon we had before half time was a very
even contribution rate - everyone was a part of what
happened in the first half. In the second half, we had
players coming in and out, in and out."
West effectively set up the win in the first 20 minutes
when it piled on 6 goals without reply.
The Bloods midfield found plenty of space and on the wide
expanses of Adelaide Oval - Chris Barrett, Luke Nathan
and Domenic Cassisi winning a ton of possesions and
finding willing targets in centre-half forward Ed
Richardson and full forward Adam Richardson.
By quarter time, West had a 44-point lead and Glenelg
just a solitary behind. In the second term West piled on
a further six goals to two to take a commanding 11-goal
lead into the main break.
While Glenelg will take something from equalling the
Bloods in the second half, coach Brenton Honor is
determined to bridge the gap between his side's best and
worst footy.
"Our first half was disgraceful, very
disapointing," he said.
"I want to find out the reason we can be so bad for
a half of footy.
"I just want some answers, because there's no reason
we should play that badly in the first half. And when we
decided to be more competitive and earn the footy and
attack the ball a bit harder and cover each other's
opponents, all those kind of things we expect of the side
we outscored them."
Glenelg did have a few bright spots on another grim day.
Mark Viska did well on Crow Scott Welsh and Sam Logan and
Ryan Smyth gave the forward line some life.
