Ugly day for
Tigers.
By Doug Robertson.
Central District ground out a useful 63-point win with a
patchy performance against a depleted Glenelg at
Elizabeth oval yesterday.
But the game took a sour tone with Tigers defender Martin
Mellody taken to hospital after half-time with persistent
heart palpitations.
The state-squad half-back struggled for breath from the
outset and spent time on the bench late in the second
term and again before time-on in the second quarter.
The Tigers' woes were compounded when skipper Simon Hele
damaged his left shoulder after being on the ground for
less than 20 minutes.
Hele, 30, who has had the same shoulder reconstructed,
showed his usual flair until a routine collision ended
his day and possibly his career. He was playing his first
game for six weeks after a nagging back/hamstring strain.
Rookie Ryan Smyth, who started the game with a suspect
shoulder, also had a trip to hospital with a severe
shoulder injury and key-position player Ben Thompson
ended the day with a sprained ankle, which sealed a
disappointing day for Glenelg.
The Tigers tested the Dogs with bursts of disciplined,
attacking football, but too often floundered.
After the Tiger's opening burst in the last term Central
outscored them five goals to two.
Veteran centreman Rick Macgowan used his 20 disposals for
the day to damaging effect and out-worked rookie Darren
O'Brien.
Marco Bello (23 touches and 4.1) ran into form while
Nathan Stienburner, Mike Stevens, James and Chris Gowans,
Heath Hopgood were all back in touch.
"I'll take a 10-goal win anytime. We kicked 17 goals
so if we're going inot our attacking 50 around 50 or 55
times it gives us a good chance to kick a (good)
score," coach Alistair Clarkson said.
Glenelg coach Brenton Honor was forced into numerous
changes but failed to find a strong route to the goal
front.
We're trying to build and get ourselves to be
competitive," honor said. "We were turning the
ball over, that's obvious, and oppostion sides are much
cleaner with it (the ball). We just don't make the most
of our opportunities. But they're having a go which is
all I can ask at the moment".
