Intensity lapse
costs Tigers again.
By James Quast.
RAIN soaked Glenelg Oval for at
least half of the game on Sunday.
The slippery conditions caused players from both Glenelg
and Woodville West Torrens to miscue and fight hard for
every possession.
But it was the Eagles, with that touch of class, which
handled the conditions and the improving Tigers with
style - home by 33 points.
Two early goals to the Eagles did not discourage the
Tigers or their umbrella-carrying fans.
And the Eagles did not help their cause early with missed
set shots.
Glenelg rover Kelvin Maher stopped an Eagles attack in
its tracks and then set up the run that culminated in the
Tigers' first goal.
They then hit the lead with three quick goals.
The second of these majors was set up by a slick handball
from Maher to Malcolm Greenwood who raced away from half
back.
Greenwood's miscued kick ended up on the chest of Matthew
Bode who kicked his first of three goals for the day.
Unlike the Eagles, the Tigers could not miss and led by
10 points at quarter time.
A goal to Bradley Smith extended the Tigers lead early in
the second quarter.
But the Eagles overtook them and kicked 12 points clear.
Again the Tigers counter attacked with two more goals -
one of them slotted through from the boundary by Kane
Cornes.
The difference was just one point.
However Chris Kluzek's goal just before half time put the
Eagles ahead by seven points.
The rain started bucketing down just as the third term
began.
The Tigers attacked several times before Bode gave off a
risky handball, received it back, and snapped truly to
level the scores.
A rushed point gave the Tigers the lead again.
The turning point of the game came when the Eagles piled
on three quick goals.
A late Kluzek goal gave the Eagles an unassailable
27-point lead.
Although the rain had cleared most spectators would have
seriously considered gum boots to make it out to the
three-quarter time address.
At the huddle Tigers coach Brenton Honor told his players
they were being slaughtered around the ball but added
they could still win the game.
The side couldn't respond, though, with the Eagles
extending their lead in the final term to 33 points.
After the game Honor said he was pleased with the Tigers'
efforts for most of the game.
"For all but about 10 minutes in the third quarter I
thought we played good footy.''
ONE to watch: Greenwood, 19, kept his side in the game
early on by helping Maher to produce much of the run from
half back.
Next week Glenelg takes on a resurgent North Adelaide at
Prospect Oval.
With the Tigers just one win and a draw ahead of the
Roosters, and with a similar percentage, this game could
decide who gets the wooden spoon.
