Poor Tigers
tamed by lowly Roosters.
By JEFF CRAWFORD
GLENELG'S progress in the second half of the season seems
to have stalled.
After beating Norwood in round 17 and drawing with Port a
week later, the Bays not only looked to be on the
comeback trail but a certainty to avoid the wooden spoon.
Losing a tough tussle against North Adelaide in difficult
conditions on Saturday has left the Tigers facing its
second bottom placing in two years if the improving
Roosters manage to upset Sturt or Norwood.
The home side adapted to the slippery conditions of the
Prospect quagmire better than Glenelg, always driving the
ball forward through desperation rather than skills.
Roosters on-ballers had far more of the ball, courtesy of
ruckmen Mark Jamar and Michael Burford controlling the
centre square and boundary throw-ins.
While Tigers full-back Paul Sherwood kept Daniel
Hargraves under pressure and barely able to get a touch,
the Roosters looked more dangerous going forward through
the run of wingman Scott Bamford, half-forward Scott
Sutherland and rover Tim Cook.
Chris Ladhams did his Crows selection chances no harm
with a solid performance in the middle, setting up plenty
of opportunities for teammates and handling the ball
well.
Power-listed Adam Morgan gave his best performance for
the season, cutting off supply for the Tigers across
half-back and providing plenty of rebound.
But the Bays looked ominous, despite kicking only a
solitary goal in the first half, due to their domination
in the air, particularly through the marking ofBen
McEntee and Matthew Golding.
Coach Brenton Honor must have given his troops a rocket
at half-time, because it was a different unit which
emerged after the long break.
Ruckman Brad Smith got his hand to ball more and the
likes of Martin Mellody, Malcolm Greenwood and Kane
Cornes lifted their work rate, using the ball more
effectively at both ends of the ground. Matthew Bode
looked like he was ready to drag his team over the line
single-handedly, converting at the goal front and looking
dangerous around the packs.
A turning point came when Tiger full-forward Sam Logan
kicked into Ray Ebel in his only set shot for goal,
keeping the lead to only seven points at three-quarter
time.
The early part of the last quarter was a stalemate, the
Roosters only allowed to scramble points before Bamford's
pace allowed him to sneak a goal from a tight angle.
A gutsy defensive mark by Travis Gluschenko, which cut
off a Logan lead, saved the day when the Roosters were
leading by one point, and from that stage the home side
dominated.
Hargraves managed to break the shackles and take several
marks, his 60m bomb for a major being the highlight.
This week's game against West at the Bay, the team's
final showing for the season, now looms as a last chance
to avoid the bottom rung and finish on a positive note.
