Long way to go, says Macca
By Paul Kermode.
Garry McIntosh may have scored his first win as Norwood coach but he is far from happy with the style of game the Redlegs are playing.
In the wake of Norwood's grinding nine-point victory over Glenelg on Saturday, a result more of determination than style, McIntosh said the club still had "a long way to go".
"We've still got a lot of work to do on what we're doing. There's still a long way to go," he said. "Once they start playing together a bit more that's what will really help - knowing each other's game.
"Our endeavour and commitment was superb. We just didn't make the right decisions with our ball use.
"Although we didn't play great footy, we ground away and managed to win in the last quarter when we were behind.
"We can take a lot from the game - that we were able to grind the game away and eventually come out on top."
Saturday's game was a scrappy affair from the outset, with neither side able to put together cohesive passages of play for any length of time.
Norwood and Glenelg combined for 1.15 in the first term and it was only a four-goal burst in the last quarter by the Redlegs that either side dominated.
The Tigers were the most wasteful, kicking 1.9 while controlling the opening quarter and consistently missing gettable shots and blazing away while bringing the ball into attack.
Coach Brenton Honor said his side was still getting used to a host of new players and a new, longer-kicking style but noted improvement from the first-round embarrassment against South. Glenelg's back six stood up for most of the day, although the defence was caught short-handed in the final term when Paul Sherwood was on the bench with a corked thigh and Matthew Manfield was thrown forward to try to spark the Tiger attack.
The mid-field prevented Norwood's on-ballers from dominating, particularly Malcom Greenwood, who restricted Brett James to just two kicks, 11 handballs and minimal influence.
But the attack misfired. Sam Logan and Marcus Baldwin did not score a goal between them, the Tigers relying on their runners for their goals.
"I didn't think our skills were very good all day - we turned the ball over a bit - and the forward line didn't function," Honor said. "Inside 50s were 52 to 45 so they had their opportunities, they just couldn't hold their marks and structurally it wasn't quite right.
"We played well enough to win but just didn't take our chances."
