"Come on, big brother!" Damon says with much enthusiasm as he stares with excitedly at the TV screen.
The annual Duel Monsters Championship is taking place and being televised. Thousands of people come every year to watch some of the best Duelists duke it out for the championship title.
This year, Damon's big brother, Kyle, has proven himself to be a very talented Duelist, and thus he now finds himself in the semifinals of his first official championship tournament. He has gone far, and is supported by his friends and family, but most especially Damon, who looks up to him as a role model.
Damon is glued to the television, not even daring to blink, as if he may miss something amazing. He is so proud of his brother. Being at the age of 14, he really didn't have many friends. He seems to attract more bullies than anything, but fortunately, his big brother looks after him. Damon, too, is a duelist, but his skills do not measure up to Kyle's, but Kyle has taught him much, and he is really getting the hang of the game.
Kyle stands at his dueling tower in the big arena, with a large load of Duel Monsters fans that make up the crowd, watching this exciting duel. A little bit of sweat trickles down his forehead, which he then wipes away with his card holding arm. This has been the toughest battle yet in this tournament.
Looking over at his exhausted deck, only holding a couple of cards left, he grows afraid that he will run out before his opponent does and thus will lose this duel. But he knows he has one chance left. Kyle is a fortunate few who have managed, after tiring searches and loads of money spent, to collect the five pieces that make up Exodia the Forbidden One. When a duelist assembles all these pieces in his hand, he automatically wins the duel.
He looks at the cards in his hand. "Perfect!" he thinks, "I already have four pieces of Exodia in my hand, and not many more cards left to draw. Any turn now and I'll be the second person to successfully summon Exodia, after that Yugi fellow that beat Seto Kaiba the other day. I'm going to make my little brother proud!"
Kyle looks up and grins at his opponent across the dueling arena. His opponent is definitely an odd one. A short kid with white hair and thick glasses, and then there is his strange fascination with bugs. This strange duelist stands there and smiles. He is very confident in his dueling situation, after all, he does have 600 more life points than Kyle, and he has the strongest monster his deck can produce on the field, his Great Moth.
The duel has been long, both players playing their hardest, playing their greatly constructed decks for all they are worth, neither side showing true weakness, until now.
Kyle's side of the field is empty, all his monsters he has played thus far have been destroyed, and he has not long left until his deck is completely used up. Only Exodia can help him now, and not even his opponent's mighty Great Moth can stop it.
"This has turned into an amazing duel, folks!" the announcer speaks out, his projected voice spreading through the stadium over the cheering excited crowd. "Newcomer Kyle Conner has proven himself to be a very tough duelist, making his way to the semi-finals in his first championship tournament. However, his opponent, Weevil Underwood, has the advantage here, and now this duel is almost won after a heated battle!"
Kyle looks at his cards in his hand. He contemplates his next move. "I do have my Mystical Elf I can play in defense. That should protect my life points, but Weevil will just destroy it his next turn. Still, it is all I can do. Besides, my next card draw on my next turn may just be the last piece of Exodia, then I will win."
"What's a matter, Kyle?" Weevil taunts with his annoying voice, "haven't you got anything left to play? You know whatever monster you bring out, my Great Moth will obliterate it. Why don't you just give up now? You are no match for my insect deck!" Weevil laughs annoyingly. He knows that this duel is his.
"It's not over yet, Weevil!" Kyle says.
"It might as well be. You have nothing left!"
Kyle places his Mystical Elf card onto the field table. "I play Mystical Elf in defense mode and I end my turn."
Weevil draws his card, not caring to even see what it is. Why does it matter anyhow? He can see that Kyle has been forced into a desperate defensive role.
"Great Moth, destroy his pathetic Mystical Elf!" He orders his next move. The large holographic Great Moth on the virtual field flies toward the defending Mystical Elf. The Elf doesn't stand and chance and is destroyed instantly.
Kyle grits his teeth and shields himself from the blast.
"So much for your Elf. Now either take another pathetic turn, or surrender!" Weevil says confidently.
Kyle knows this is it. He just has to draw that last piece. He moves his hand to draw a card from his deck, holding it there.
He looks at his good luck golden wristband on his wrist. It has always brought him luck now and then. At that moment, he thinks of how he got it, so many years ago, before Nathan was even born. His father was coming from a business trip, and he had a layover in Egypt. While waiting for his next plane to board, he comes across this golden wristband with a mysterious eye-like design engraved on it. Something about it caught his attention, and he decided to buy it as a gift for his son. Ever since Kyle's father gave him this wristband, he has worn it everywhere and all the time. Years later, when Nathan was only three years old, their father mysteriously disappeared and has never been seen since. This wristband keeps the memory of their father alive, and brings him much luck, and every night, Kyle hopes it will help bring their father home.
Kyle closes his eyes, hoping for that last Exodia piece.
"Hang in there, big brother!" Damon says to the television. His fists are clinched tightly, his knuckles turning white. He has much faith in his brothers dueling skill, and no matter the situation, he knows that his brother never gives up.
"Please be the last piece!" Kyle thinks to himself. He draws a card. Hesitantly opening his eyes, he is filled with joy.
It isn't the Exodia piece though, but something that can ensure him getting it. He drew a card called Pot of Greed, which when played, allows him to draw two more cards, which is exactly how many he has left. His Exodia piece must be one of those two, and this turn, he will be able to get it in his hand and finally win.
"Okay, Weevil!" Kyle says strongly, "I play Pot of Greed. It allows me to draw two more cards, and I know that one of those cards will ensure my victory!"
Weevil shows no change in his attitude. He knows something that Kyle does not.
Kyle draws the last two cards, and to his surprise, not one of them is the last piece of Exodia!
"What!?"
Kyle is shocked. Apparently, that card was not in his deck like it was supposed to be. What could have happened to it?
"I… I have no move this turn…" Kyle looks down at the four pieces of Exodia in his hand. So close… yet so far.
"Awww, such a pity" Weevil lays on the sarcasm. "Now, Great Moth, attack his remaining life points!"
The Great Moth strikes at Kyle, while Kyle watches his life point meter drop to zero. This defeat is painfully felt. He feels that he has failed, after getting so far, and then leaving with nothing.
Damon stares at the television screen in disbelief.
"It can't be… my big brother lost…" Damon shares in Kyle's feelings of failure.
Kyle walks down the hallway, away from the stadium arena, his deck in hand.
Where could that last piece of Exodia be? He is sure that he didn't drop any cards during his trip to the tournament, or while he was there.
Weevil appears in the hallway, showing his obvious victorious grin on his face. Kyle turns to see him, and being the good sport that he is, smiles and walks up to his opponent.
"Good duel, Weevil" Kyle comments as he extends his arm to Weevil.
Weevil does not return the gesture. "Cram your pathetic sportsmanship!" Weevil exclaims, obviously not showing his appreciation.
Kyle's smile fades and he begins to simply walk off. He might as well not even try with this sour winner.
As soon as Kyle turns to walk away, Weevil starts speaking again. "Oh, Kyle. You want your card back?" He says with a chuckle.
It then hits Kyle. Weevil had taken his last Exodia piece before the duel. He knew that he couldn't face against Exodia, so the little cheater kept me from being able to use it.
Kyle turns to see Weevil holding the card out, waving it. A huge grin creases the little bug boy's face.
"Weevil!" Kyle starts in a heat of rage, "You little cheater! Give me that card back! I'm going to make sure you are disqualified from this tournament!"
"You have to catch me first!" Weevil darts away with the card in the opposite direction down the hall. He's certainly fast for a little guy. Kyle immediately pursues.
Weevil rams open a door and drops the Exodia piece, but continues to run. Seconds later, Kyle reaches it and picks up his card, and continues his chase.
As Kyle turns the corner in this new hallway, he sees Weevil with a security guard.
"There he is, officer!" Weevil says with a fake tone of distress, pointing at Kyle, "he is chasing after me. I think he wants to hurt me for beating him 'fair and square' at our duel that he had just a little while ago."
Weevil's obvious lies seem to be fooling the guard. Must not be the brightest guard around here, unfortunately for Kyle.
"Sir," the officer says calmly, "I believe you should leave the premises."
Though angry, Kyle complies. He doesn't want to start a scene after all.
Damon is the first one to make it to the door to meet his returning brother. Though Kyle has come home empty handed, Nathan is still proud of him, but still, Kyle does feel devastated. He lost to someone who cheated his way to victory.
Damon immediately hug Kyle before he can even step foot in the house. This cheers him up greatly, and he quickly returns the hug.
"You were great, big brother," Damon says with an admiring smile on his face. Kyle returns the smile in kind. "Thanks, Damon." Nothing else had to be said about it. Damon was still proud of him, and that is all that mattered.
Kyle and Damon spent the night taking about Duel Monsters, like they do on countless occasions. They would also have friendly duels between them. Kyle would always win, but it didn't matter to Damon, who continued to learn new strategies from his brother in the process.
They would also talk about their father. Damon can hardly remember him, being that he was only three when he disappeared. Kyle would describe to Damon what kind of man he was. He was a kind man, and a great provider for the family. He was very successful at his career, but what mattered most to Kyle and Damon, was how he loved them. He was a strong man too, with strong facial features as well, most notably his strong square jaw and his kind blue eyes. It was very hard on the family when he disappeared. Their mother had to take two jobs and Kyle was expected to run the household and take care of Damon. There were hard times, but they pulled through. Their father would have been proud.
After staying up until the early morning hours, Damon falls asleep in the living room couch. Kyle covers him up with a blanket, and smiles at his sleeping brother. Damon looks so young, but is a strong willed child, Kyle knows for certain. At that moment, he can't help but feel that Damon is destined for something great. Greater than his own life… Greater than their father's. "Good night, Damon. Sweet dreams," he says as he turns off the light and heads for his room.
