In a very different Tokyo from the one we know today, the totalitarian government rules with an iron fist. But a group called "the Sect" is staging demonstrations and challenging the government's martial law. Constable Fuse of the Capital Police's Special Unit is on a mission to stop a Sect demonstration when he encounters a girl in the sewers under Tokyo. When he fails to shoot as ordered, he is put on trial, questioned, and "re-conditioned" as a soldier. But the dead girl haunts him, both in his dreams and in the face of her sister, whom Fuse has befriended. But Fuse has made himself a target for some very powerful men. And as his world comes crashing down around him, Fuse is continually challenged to decide what is real and what is right.

Scripted by the legendary anime director Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell, Patlabor) and directed by Hiroyuki Okiura (Ghost in the Shell), Jin-Roh is a film that asks the question: can man ever truly rise above the level of a mere beast.

Review

You can purchase this title at RACSJin-Roh is a great movie. If you like action and violence, you'll be hooked by this movie. If you're an intellectual type, you'll be enthralled by the story. And if you're like me, meaning both is what you prefer, then you're in for a real treat.

I liked how the film covered aspects of human nature, psychology, phillosophy, and fairy tales, but the creators didn't forget that many of us also want to see gratuitous violence even when watching a film that makes us think. A fine example would be Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange, which mixed some great philosophical elements with violence.

Sound

Loved it. The sound effects were right on. From gunshots to footsteps, viewers are immersed in a sea of sound. I really enjoyed the dub as well, Michael Dobson plays a believable Fuse.

Visual

Production I.G. did some great work, as usual, with the animation. Angry mobs, gunfire, explosions, vehicles, and the Special Unit's combat suits all fit together well, with nothing seeming out of place or over-the-top. I could really tell that the animators spent a good deal of time researching, visiting zoos, and studying wildlife footage to get such realistic looking wolves that appear in some dream sequences.

Extras

There are none, unless you buy the Special Edition DVD.
