Susan Schelle

Susan Schelle, a Toronto artist and Fine Arts instructor at the University of Toronto is currently teaching a course entitled "Women and Art" [VIS 209H]. This course explores the history of women artists and the concept of the feminine in art with a strong focus on recent works and an emphasis on Canadian artists. Schelle has done a number of large public sculptures, including Salmon Run at the Sky Dome; the domino-and-chessboard themed Spadina and Bloor parkette (on the south-east corner of the intersection); a life-size granite couch in the courtyard of the posh Prince Albert Condominium Complex (north of the intersection of Bloor and Avenue, on the west side); and an inlaid floor and massive book stack sculpture at the York University campus. She is currently working on an exhibition of photographs, and frequently collaborates with a partner. A selection of gallery showings of her work from the early nineties is included below, and each picture provides a link to the gallery site where it is archived. These gallery sites often include a brief explanation and description of the piece, the time it was displayed, and sometimes a critical analysis.

Passage, 1993

After all these years of struggle, it's coming into the wholeness of life, the wholeness of yourself again. And you realise that you had nothing to learn -- that you had it all from the very beginning. Once you make good in one thing, all else will follow.
