STEVE WILSON:
There is a myth that has grown up around Porcupine Tree that it started out as a "joke" band. As usual this myth is probably mostly my fault and I may even have believed it myself at one stage. The truth is that the music was far from a joke, but the way it was first presented was. The tracks themselves were affectionate tributes to the music that myself and my friend Malcolm Stocks were listening to at the time. For example, the day after Malcolm bought a copy of Fred Frith's "Guitar Solos" album, we made the track "Wastecoat", a primitive copy of Frith's treated guitar style. Imitating is what most musicians start off doing (and some spend their whole career doing) - trying to learn how to make music by analysing how the artists they like make music and then copying it. That's what this nascent Porcupine Tree music is all about - these are pastiches, homages and tributes to what we liked listening to, each written, recorded and mixed in a matter of 2 or 3 hours.
Once I'd made the music I decided to compile some of it onto a tape as if it were a proper album. I dubbed fake applause on to some tracks (plus some booing taken from a concert on BBC radio 3) to create the "live" side of the album. I didn't know what I was going to do with it, it was purely for my own amusement and I only duplicated two copies - one each for myself and Malcolm. To go with the tapes we made up a text relating the entirely fictional history of Porcupine Tree (me) and Solomon St Jemain (Malcolm) that detailed a long history and string of albums the two had made leading up to this, their latest masterwork. We filled this fake history with a lot of psychedelic and hippy clichés, including drugs which we knew fuck all about, and politics (even less), but they seemed appropriate for the kind of "band" we had created. All of this certainly was a joke but it was never meant to be anything but a private one. I didn't think anyone would be interested in this kind of music anyway - this was the late eighties, a lean time for anything inspired by the music of the 1967-75 era. Or so I thought....
Then one day I bought a copy of UK music magazine Q and was surprised to see contemporary bedroom psychedelia songwriter Bevis Frond (aka Nick Saloman) reviewed favourably. I bought one of the albums, got the address and sent off a copy of my little tape to Nick. I think he kind of liked it, or bits of it anyway, as he rang me up one day and gave me a whole list of companies and fanzines that I should send it to, for which I'm eternally grateful to him (without whom...). So I duplicated and despatched a batch of tapes and made up a booklet with our fictional history and some other nonsense, under the ludicrous misapprehension that people would take it more seriously (!!!) if they thought it was a proper band with a history. Somehow it still picked up some favourable responses and I was able to sell a few mail order. Encouraged, I completed a second tape The Nostalgia Factory, this time pretty much on my own and without Malcolm egging me on, as he had moved off to Devon to live in a lone caravan in the middle of a field (no, really).
One of the people Nick had put me in touch with was Richard Allen at Freakbeat magazine, which basically homed in on and wrote about exactly what the mainstream music press didn't. At the time Richard and his partner Ivor Trueman were planning to start a label to release some of the music they were writing about. Richard selected a track from the second Porcupine Tree tape (Linton Samuel Dawson) for the first Delerium Record release, a double vinyl compilation "Psychedelic Psauna". In the meantime he also wrote a review of both cassettes in Freakbeat - it wasn't exactly an ecstatic review, but the tapes must have grown on him because first Delerium reissued them in cassette form with new covers (selling about 300 of each) and then Richard wrote to me and said he wanted to put out the tapes as two double albums. I thought about it but in the end decided a much better release could be made by compiling the strongest material onto one double LP, which subsequently became "On the Sunday of Life..." (1992). Aboutlf of the music from the cassettes found it's way onto this album and most of the remaining music was released on a limited edition (and long unavailable unless you feel like paying $100 on Ebay) CD called "Yellow Hedgerow Dreamscape" in 1994 (also later reissued in a deluxe vinyl edit nby Gates of Dawn in 2000).
So all of the music ended up available elsewhere.... kind of. Actually, many tracks were different when they ended up on the two CD/vinyl releases - some were substantially remixed, many edited (sometimes by only a few seconds, but a few by considerably more) and some had additional reverb or echo effects added in an attempt to disguise their humble lo-fi origins. In addition many of the titles were changed. No-one has complained to my knowledge about these changes, but on the other hand there does seem to be a lot of trading of copies of the original cassettes going on, so I guess there is still a curiosity to hear them unedited and in the original sequence.

Of course, while I was making all this music something original seemed to poke through which became the basis for an original Porcupine Tree sound. By the time that original sound had been achieved a few years later, the music was so far removed from these early tapes - influenced as they were by a spirit of psychedelia that all but disappeared from my writing soon after - that I really wonder what people who came to the band through more recent work must make of this music. Some dismiss it as amateurish and of historical interest only, others seem to enjoy it's naive charm and psychedelic whimsy. As ever I find myself somewhere in the middle.

A DIVERSION
Lord Percy Blampton is sitting at the breakfast table one morning, reading his mail, when quite abruptly he takes a revolver from his pocket and blows his head off.
His brains make a delightful display on the newly decorated west-wing verandah.
Roger the butler, much distressed by this turn of events, handcuffs himself to the breakfast table and attempts to bury his head in a rum trifle.
There is a knock at the small trapdoor situated underneath Lord Blampton’swheelchair. A convoy of Estonian flowers arrangers and a inflatable Salman Rushdie precede the ghost of the recently deceased Lord Percy.
Percy attempts to indulge his headless corpse in a discussion about milk bottle top sculpture and the genius John Travolta. A heated argument ensues&ldots;
Eventually Both Sir Percy’s retire to the garden to perform an old Fred Astaire number, with a life sized photograph of Russ Abott as a suitable Ginger.
Lady Blampton is naturally bemused by these events. Her attention is drawn to an invitation card at the top of her husband’s pile of mail:

CHAPTER 97 - THE PLOT THICKENS (An update to the unlikely history of Porcupine Tree)
A brief resume for those unacquainted with the story so far:
In 1973 a certain Solomon St. Jemain forms the INCREDIBLE EXPANDING MINDFUCK to satisfy an invitation to play support to MAN, EDGAR BROUGHTON and others at the Festival of Expanding Conciousness in Paris. Jemain attempts to incite riot and is jailed for 21 days where much of the first LP is "composed".
"Ectoplasm Spasm" emerges in early 1975 on the JEFFERSON-BRYCE label containing such gems as "Nations At Peace" (later covered by Donovan but unreleased), "Queen Quotes Crowley" and the 26 minute tittle track.
Sales barely top 1000 but the IEM become overnight sensations with the Paris underground.
Jemain puts together a permanent band and a lenghty tour of Europe results in a double live LP called "My Head Has Not Become A Cricket Pitch (But Is Flying To Venus As We Speak)" in late 1976. The LP is more successful than the fist and one track called "Mutate Baby" becomes the band’s most requested piece and gains play on pirate radio stations.
Jemain is disillusioned bu the rising tide of punk and plans for a new record are scrapped when Jermain leaves France to "find himself".
In 1981 Jemain is reunited with his ex-drummer THE EXPANDING FLAN who introduces him to a brilliant young musician called the PORCUPINE TREE.
The three become good friends and produce hours of experimental tapes on Flan’s houseboat. Much of this material emerges in the form of a 3 LP set on the CRUMB label in 1982 called "Music To Blow Your Mind By" (due for release in cassette format by No Man’s Land in 1992).
In 1993 on the eve of the band’s plans to record a single called "Radioactive Toy" Tree is deported on a drug related charge and the two factions decide to continue working on their own projects and communicating through bizarre cassette tapes. A mutual cassette label GODHEAD INDUSTRIES is formed and The Incredible Expanding Mindfuck’s "To Darling Lizzie A Noble Cardboard Box" and Porcupine Tree’s "I PROCLAIM MYSELF GOD!"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Page 6
are released in 1985 and sold to a growing core of fanatic fans in both countries.

In 1986 Jemain and Flan are able to travel to England to join Porcupine Tree’s new band which is assembled from some of the musicians and freaks living and working at Tree’s Periscope Station studio in Devon. The first venture is a selection of British concerts and a cassette release of experimental jams and prelimenary sketches called "Cream Cakes For Everyone!".The tour culminates in a performance on the second stage at Glastonbury and a session for French radio.
The band have just begun recording their first LP when Jermain is traced and deported. The loss significantly affects the band and the LP "Tarquin’s Seaweed Farm" does not emerge for another year, though by this time it has become a double play cassette with a live LP included as well as the studio tracks.
The reviews for Tarquin are excellent with many fanzines proclaiming it to be the finest example of modern psychedelia they have yet heard.
Since then Porcupine Tree has had numerous offers to record for independent labels. While details are being finalised he has chosen to release this double LP in cassette form. The First side of the LP was originally released as a cassette EP called "Love, Death And Mussolini" with out-takes and demos taking it up to LP length.
However Tree was always unhappy with this arrangement and so in the Spring/Summer of 1990 Tree returned to No Man’s Land studios to complete a further set of compositions from which the remaining music on this LP was selected.
Those of you who are familiar with the "Tarquin" double LP will recognize a powerful development in the Porcupine Tree’s sound with more emphasis on detail and less on rambling solos (inspired though they were). Much of the music was recorded by Tree alone or with various guest musicians.
The result is both the most peculiar and most accessible set of music the Tree has yet recorded. It continues his obsession with combining psychedelic music of the sixties and seventies with the technology of the eighties and nineties. As Tree said, "Too many so called modern psychedelic bands reject technology in favour of recreating yesterday’s sound. To reject the sampler or even the drum machine is to deny the spirit that experimental music should always be made in. These musicians become nothing more than a nostalgia factory".
The tittle then, is with tongue firmly in cheek.

TIME FOR THE PORCUPINE TREE TO EXPLAIN HIMSELF
I HAVE NOTHING TO SAY
EXCEPT&ldots;.
I wanted this to be a whirling light from the other end of the stars.
I wanted it to sound like planets exploding and then onthe other hand like a desert wind.
Sometimes this is difficult.
To obtain quality it is important to record in the best environment with the best people. So I did (except "Begonia" which was recorded on my front lawn) and I thank you all.
I wanted it to be a double album (like the last one) in loving memory of Ken Dodd and Donovan. People try to tell me they’re not dead yet but I know differently.
All the words were written by Allan Duffy except on the instrumentals were they weren’t written at all (or if they were then they served no purpose and so were not used).
I like Instrumentals.
But I also like songs. I’ve tried to keep more of a balance on this album.
There were too many instrumentals (or songs without words as I already explained) on the last one.
When I recorded it I imagined it as a double album. I love double albums, don’t you? Isn’t "Ummagumma" a riot? And "Tago Mago" a scream?
Donovan did a good one too.
That’s why I divided this album into four sides although it’s on 2 sides of a cassette. When it comes out on CD it will seem even more ridiculous.
But I don’t care.
When you play it perhaps you’ll humour me and mime turning over the sides of the record? Perhaps someone else will humour me and press the record up.
I think the next one will be a triple album. Don’t you just love triple albums?

I'm afraid I don't know what happened with this before it appeared on CDR. Soundforge was used to remove some glitches and CDWave was used to re-track.
Please note: There is a glitch 51 seconds into Not Beautiful Anymore that i just couldn't remove. It doesn't even last for a second, but it is noticeable.
This is a nice recording of Porcupine Tree's second ever show. Voyage 34 and the second half of Burning Sky were used on the rare and long-deleted limited-edition cassette/vinyl release of "Spiral Circus". All tracks for that release were recorded directly from the mixing desk to Cassette or DAT, so it's entirely possible that this recording also went through that process.

Again, this is another nice soundboard recording of early Porcupine Tree. They only played 7 shows in 1994 and it's nice to have a decent recording from that era when songs from Up The Downstair were still prominant in the setlist. Preface (by remasterer)
To begin with this remaster has been quite an adventure in making. It started out as an attempt to improve on an inferior copy of this show. A copy that had numerous pops and gaps. There were also a couple spots on the disc that had some jitter. It was determined that the overall bass sound needed to be increased. Much time was spent trying to clean up the imperfections. The bass was increased to a pleasing level. While this made some improvement in the overall sound, a completely clean copy was not to be had. The jitter problem could not be reduced at all. What should have been done in the first place now became apparent, a clean copy was in need to be found. At this point a fellow trader came forth, on his own, offering just that. With a clean copy all that had to be done was to increase the bass frequency. This remaster may be a subtle change to many. If you have a decent sound system, like one with a sub woofer, the difference is very clear. Compared to the sound of the original Colin's bass now rumbles adaquately. In addition a cover with title is now available and the wave files have been converted to shn format. This is an awesome show. It is widely considered by many as the best Signify era recording.
