Model House |
Project Report |
Project Name - 3-D Model of a House |
- Design Brief: To build a 3D model of your dream home based upon your 2D designs.
- Context: Many homes are designed around tight budgets and simple construction techniques. Hence they are usually just another box attached to the hallway. They are not very interesting spaces.
- Possible Solutions: Win the lottery 7 times to pay off the mortgage, look through a home magazine and dream about what could be, have Martha Stewart tell you what to do, or build interesting designs around a small budget.
- Design Constraints: The following are some constraints or limitations for this project:
- You will work individually
- The project will be evaluated during another period (i.e., you can do some "fine tuning" at home).
- Your design will be presented in class
- You will use ½'' = 1' scale.
- Detail Design: The following are the steps to designing and making your model house:
- Ensure that the work area is clear of hazardous materials (i.e., oil, gas, rags, wood, plastic, etc.)
- Firmly taped my 2 dimensional diagram
- Traced the 2 dimensional designs to the base of my house.
- Cut out walls to scale.
- Adhered the walls to the foundation of the house using pins and glue.
- Clean up your work area and put your tools away.
- Materials: Exacto Knife, Foam Board, Pins, Glue, and Bristow Board, Graphite Paper, Pencil, Ruler, Scale Ruler
- Commissioning: As I began my house I quickly began to realize that working with foam board and build a model house is not as easy as I thought. Although after I began working with the tools and began to learn how to measure and cut things accurately I began successful in building my model house.
- Evaluation: Once again there were some unexpected bumps and problems I managed to solve along the way. For example I quickly learned that in some areas I needed to account for the thickness of the foam board while measuring walls, also realized that the roof require a lot of calculations and precise cutting in order to fit onto the house.
- Reflection: I enjoyed this project because I learned new things about working with different tools and new materials that I have not worked with in the past, such as scale rulers and foam board. Also to design and build your own house and look and the finished product at the end is a rewarding experience. I learned that it is tougher to cut out materials such as foam board or materials with thickness than cutting out paper and that has little thickness. Also I learned that there is little room for short cuts in measuring walls because one minor error might through your entire house off. I learned it is important to take my time cutting the foam board and not to cut at an angle and to cut over top of the paper to ensure the best results. I was very proud at the skills I learned and next time I think I would build maybe a simpler house maybe on one floor because I also learned that building stairs and tying roofs together is a very difficult task.
