Sam slid out of bed as quietly as he could and moved to sit on the window seat, leaning as far out as he could, breathing in the soft scent of the morning.

"You always loved the morning," he whispered. "Quiet and still before the rest of the world woke up. Remember how you would sit out in the garden, watching me?" He looked over his shoulder and smiled at the still figure in the bed. "I always knew where you were," he continued. "Every second of every day, I knew where you were, and that never changed."

He sighed. "All these long years, love, watching our family grow and marry - who would have thought that would ever happen! When I think of dancing with you under the moon, when we were both young. I always thought I would live the long years of my life with you, but I never realised what that meant."

He heard his name whispered on a sigh, and then the sound of shifting cotton followed by the soft pad of feet on the floor.

"You told me to always follow my heart. You knew, you always knew. 'I don't have all your heart, Samwise,' you said to me once. 'But I don't begrudge him his share. Your heart is big enough for both of us.'" He put his hand over his mouth, hiding a smile and swallowing a sob in one movement. "And you were right. I couldn't get him out of my head, out of my heart. I loved him so much, even though I thought I had lost him."

Arms around his neck and a soft kiss on his hair, along with a whispered, "Come to bed, love. It's still so early."

Sam sat quietly for a moment, still staring out of the window, his eyes narrowing against the glare of the distant sea. "Rest you gentle, Rosie. Sleep you sound. You told me to follow my heart, and I did. I came home."

He pushed himself off the seat and wrapped his arm around Frodo's waist, leading him back to bed.
