1999 - 2001 GHS
         Rifle Teams

The 1999 - 2000 season was not bad for Griffin Rifle Team. The team had a record of 10 wins and 2 losses. One shooter made the All-state Team, two on the All- Area Team, and four made it to state competition.
But then the five seniors graduated. With only two of the starters returning, the team was looking at 2000 - 2001 to be a rebuilding year, to train new shooters and give them some experience in competitions for there next 3 years.
But the new shooters picked up quickly, and within a few months, the returning team members didn't know if they would be in the line-up at the season start.
The coach, CSM Lang, and the team captain, Jeremy Moore, were begining to believe that this wouldn't be a rebuilding season, but a winning season. With the two returning varsity members (team captain Jeremy Moore and co-captain Jessica McClain), two returning team members (co-captain Barry Oliver and member Jimmy Crawford), and a first year shooter (Roderick Foster), the team started the season with a win over Tri-cities High-school. The next week, freshman Micheal Barrett replaced Crawford for the team's win over Stockbridge. Then, the team defeated Eagle's Landing, moving to 3-0. The 4th match put Robert Evans in the line-up in place of Barrett, but the team fell to 3-1, with only a 4 point loss to the defending state champions East Coweta. Match 5 saw Jason Hattaway for the first time, replacing Evans, and the team moved to 4-1, with a 23 point win over Henry County. Match 6 resulted in a 42 point win over Heritage with the teams season high 1142, and Rachel Durham taking the fifth spot for the match. Match 7 end with Griffin on top by 23 points over Newton High. The team moved to 7 and 1 win a win over Bannakar. Match 9 the team dropped to 7-2 record with a 5 point loss to Creekside, the defending Area runners-up, with Crawford returning to replace the sick Durham. In match 10, against Union Grove, starter Jessica McClain was sick and out of competition. Rachel Durham returned to take up the slack, and Evans returned to the fifth spot and the team had a 167 point win, moving them to 8-2. Match 11 resulted in McClain's return, and Durham in the fifth slot, but Woodward Academy still pulled ahead with a 20 point victory over Griffin. The 12th and final match ended with a win over the three-man Westlake team by a margin of 376 points.
All in all, the season was pretty good. A team in forth place with a record of 9-3, and more than 5 of the schools indiviual records broken isn't bad for a rebuilding team. Senior Jeremy Moore now holds the prone record, kneeling record, standing record, overall record, and the highest average record. Freshman Roderick Foster tied the prone record, and set each of the same records as Moore in the first year shooter catagory. Barry Oliver and Jessica McClain each tied the prone reocrd as well. The team collectively fired 13,529 points, 600 of which were perfect scores. Everyone on the team was a participating member. Everyone helped out. Even those who didn't shoot supported the team through every win and every loss. It was a great season, despite a forthplace finish. Each of the 13 team members now know that no matter what they go through, they've got at least 12 friends (and a really great coach.)
