Rolling Stones

Rolling Stones are not stones.  Rather, they are variety of giant mollusk - specifically a species of land snail, horribly mutated by the effects of ghost rock radiation.   Dwelling in relatively dry, rocky areas around hilly terrain, Rolling Stones tend to range in size from spherical rock-like things a bit larger than a cycle helmet to man-sized boulders. It is named partly for its shell.  The shell of a Rolling Stone has an appearance and texture very similar to the surrounding rocky terrain it chooses to live in, which lends it an exceptional camouflage and stealth ability.  It also affords it with excellent protection, providing the soft body of the snail itself with a light armor capable of turning most light caliber bullets.  Furthermore, it's surface is studded with a variety of sharp, jagged spiraled ridges...really the only means (aside from a glistening slime trail that evaporates quickly in their chosen environment) of separating the snail from the surrounding terrain.

The second part of the snail's more common moniker comes from it's main choice of attack.  The Rolling Stone is a carnivore and scavenger and has a predatory intelligence, combined with a limited telepathic ability with others of its kind. They can sense nearby heat and movement (through ground contact) from up to several miles away.  However, being snails, they are cursed with an unbearably slow movement despite their size.  This had led to a rather unique adaption in hunting technique.  Working in groups or packs, Rolling Stones will attempt to slowly set up an ambush for prospective prey.  Typical places for an ambush are at the bases of rocky hills or slopes.  When their prey is beneath them, the group of Stones will attack en mass by overbalancing their shells and actually rolling down the slope, creating the effect of a rockslide (the snail's shell protects it from taking any damage in the slide).  Each time an individual is struck by a rock from the resultant slide, there is a good chance that the rock is instead one of the snails...but it's very difficult to tell a snail shell from a regular rock in such a cicumstance. The stones hope that their targets will be killed outright or incapacitated by the slide, after which they can feed upon what's left.  Focusing upon their victims, the snails will then slowly move to a position in which they can feed.  This is done by regurgitating (actually rather like spitting, also used for defense) their strong corrosive stomach acids onto the victim, allowing it to dissolve into a thick, soupy substance and then slurping the mash back up again.

Special Powers:

Rock Slide Damage: If a group of Rolling Stones successfully set up an ambush, treat the attack as if it were a rock slide (see page 114-115 of Shattered Coast).  Each time an individual is struck with a rock roll a d4.  If the result is a 1, the individual was struck by one of the sharp-edged shells of the attacking Rolling Stones (a result of 2 on the slide chart: size 3 Rolling Stone (3d6 damage), 3: size 4 (4d8 damage), 4: size 5 (4d10 damage), 5: size 6 (4d20 damage)).  Relative size descriptors match those of the slide chart.

Armored Shell: The rock-like shell gives the Rolling Stone an AV of 3.  The body of the snail itself has no armor value.  The snail also has the uncanny ability to always be able to right itself within the shell, and for protection can retract most of its body inside, gripping the ground beneath it with it's powerful muscular foot making it hard to move (it receives +2 on opposed strength rolls on such attempts).  Furthermore, while drawn up inside of  it's shell, the Rolling Stone takes no additional damage from head or gizzard shots (these targets aren't readily available in such circumstances).

Natural Camouflage: In its environment, the Rolling Stone's shell helps it blend into terrain (TN 11 to spot, assuming the searcher knows what they're looking for).  Combined with its slow natural movement, it also adds a +4 bonus to it's sneak rolls.

Acid: By exposing its head, the Rolling Stone can spit its powerful stomach acid at a target (Range: 2, Speed: 1, Damage: 3d10).
