To All Yes

Nearly there! As I write, I have just 10 days before I leave for the Greatland. I am beginning to get really excited, the culmination of almost two years' planning and organisation! Almost the same for you I guess! Sorry you have had to read lots of paperwork recently and had to send in passports at the last minute. There may be an occasion to tell you about it soon, but it has been frenetic! Hope you did well in your exams etc. and that you can put them to one-side until your return in early September. A few reminders now, probably repeated in Liz's letter!

Carry ID with you at all times (photocopied Passport page covered in plastic, remember!)
Recommended that you take any spending money as cash or plastic- ravellers' cheques (checks) in Stirling will only be accepted at a bank (US Dollar cheques ok)! You will probably want some money in Anchorage for first couple of days and on journey home. Take your pre-addressed postcards to write to sponsors and family. Take supplements like curry powder and herbs – note menu sent with last package.
Take Sun Block for any sun (!) and, if you want, Aqueous iodine (with a drop dispenser from your local chemist) for drinking water to avoid Giardia Lamblia, 2 drops in un-boiled water gives some protection, as well as a horrible taste! Remember, I have the authority, given by Council, to send you home at your own expense for behaviour that is or could be prejudicial to the safety and well-being of the expedition. In over 60 years this has VERY rarely been done, but it will be, should the occasion arise. Take some strong "mossie" repellent (containing DEET), I aim to get some for everyone but I may fail. The mosquitoes are BIG and hungry!
It will make things a great deal easier if, please, you could wear your BSES AK1 tee shirt if you have one, or a dark blue top, for the journey – easier to identify you in the throng!
I would advise that you wear a pair of light trousers and tee shirt for the journey, carrying your waterproof ready for arrival in ANC! It may be easier to wear heavy boots rather than to pack them. Re-read ALL Admin notes and information!
Do not take food into the States, eat it before arriving in Chicago if you have some, otherwise it is liable to be confiscated by US Customs. Once on the 'plane US laws apply and under-age drinking (under 21) is not allowed. Have a pen available in LGW and/or on the 'plane as you will have to complete and immigration form – you are British / UK citizen by the away! Keep your and luggage to under 7kg and consider writing your surname and initials on the outside of your rucksack/ backpack – where your back rests is best. Ensure you have paid BSES in full before leaving LGW, or agree arrangements with the office. DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) ought not to affect you (you are young, fit and whilst a long flight it is not a long haul flight). Nevertheless, my advice is to at least "jiggle" your legs on a regular basis, maybe visit the loo and generally do not stay immobile. However, please don't be a pain on the flight, getting up and down continuously, especially when food and drinks are served, it is not necessary and you will attract the ire of the Stewards, and Martin, who will be in charge! Until day 5 when you leave Nome Creek Base Camp on Fire Recces and training, you will be living and travelling in places and areas I have visited. However, from that point on you will be exploring, discovering, working and investigating the unknown. What will you find? How will you cope? What will you do? See you at about 8.00 p.m. local time in Anchorage Airport on 21 July.
