| Alaska 01 - Maps All the maps we are using can be purchased in Alaska, they are not that expensive ) about $4.00 each), but they are not generally available. Therefore, we are most grateful to Col Nick Rigby i/c 42 Engineer Regiment (Military Survey) who have kindly provided all that we require. It is hoped you will receive a copy of the general area at 1:250,000 so you can put it on your bedroom wall and sit and dream. It may be possible to arrange purchase of maps for individuals when we are in Alaska, but it cannot be guaranteed. The maps we will use most often in the field are 1:63360 (1 inch to 1 mile). Fire leaders will hold these, they will be used for planning purposes and will be available for active use when we are in the field. It has been found that these maps are great for planning but their accuracy for use when hiking in such wilderness areas will leave much to be desired. They have been created from aerial photographs and some have not been completely redrawn for almost forty years things change especially rivers and streams. You must remember these maps are not at all like our O.S. maps which are probably the finest in the world; remember just how big Alaska is in terms of area and population and this may explain why! The US system for Grid references is "interesting", but if you know how to create and use Grid References, and can appreciate Latitude and Longitude, then it is not that difficult make sure you know how before AK1. The maps will be VERY useful when in Alaska, so don't lose them, destroy them in the inevitable river crossing, or even " hide" them your life may depend upon them! A strong plastic bag is very good for protecting the map, having folded to the appropriate section for the day, much cheaper and more effective than spending money on a commercially produced (often bulky) map-case. You will find knowing about navigation and how to use a (Silva?) Compass helpful! |
