FARGO, N.D. - North Dakota men's basketball head coach Rich Glas earned his 400th career win Friday, as UND overcame an eight-point second-half deficit and defeated host North Dakota State, 75-67, in NCC basketball at the Bison Sports Center.
It was the 12th consecutive win for the Sioux (12-1 overall, 5-0 NCC), who are 5-0 in the conference for the first time since 1990-91. NDSU fell to 9-3 overall and 2-3 in the conference.
Senior forward Kyle Behrens (Hayfield, Minn.) paced UND with a career-high 24 points, with 14 coming in the second half. North Dakota point guard Curtis Munlin (Mishawaka, Ind.) tied a career best with 18 points, and Sioux forward Tom Jacobson (Sr., Mayville, N.D.) added 17 points. NDSU was led by sophomore guard Denver TenBroek, who had a career-high 29 points.
The North Dakota comeback was fueled by strong free throw shooting, as the Sioux made 21-of-25 (84 percent) from the charity stripe in the second half.
UND trailed by eight points (54-46) with 10:36 to play in the game after Bison center Marc Forbush tipped in a missed three-point attempt by teammate Denver TenBroek. Glas called a timeout, and the Sioux began chipping away at the Bison lead.
The first six points in the comeback were free throws. Jacobson got the first two, then Jeff Brandt (Fr., Minot, N.D.) hit two, and then Ryan Walker (So., Mohall, N.D.) got two. Walkers free throws cut the Bison lead to four points (56-52) with 7:52 to play, and 32 seconds later Behrens scored, was fouled, and made his free throw to cut the margin to 56-55, NDSU.
NDSU's Joe Hedin then missed the front end of a one-and-one, and on UND's next trip down the floor, Behrens scored on a dunk to give the Sioux a 57-56 lead with 6:58 to play. Less than half-a-minute later, Walker scored to make it 59-56, capping a 13-2 UND run.
The Bison cut the Sioux lead to one at 61-60 when NDSU guard Ben Nemmers hit a three-pointer with 5:50 to play, but that was as close as the Bison got the rest of the way. Munlin hit 6-of-6 free throws in the final minutes to seal the win.
In the first half, UND scored the first four points of the game and led until the final seconds of the first half. UND had four six-point leads and one seven-point lead in the first 13 minutes, but then TenBroek got hot, scoring nine points in the final seven minutes of the half, including two three-pointers that were at least three feet beyond the arc.
NDSU closed the half with a 10-2 run and led 28-27 at halftime. NDSU scored the final points of the half when Nemmers drove into the lane and passed off to forward Brian Silk, who scored on a five-foot shot from the baseline with five seconds left.
TenBroek continued his hot shooting in the early going of the second half, scoring 14 points in the first 6:41. TenBroek's shooting display included three more long three-pointers, one of which turned into a four-point play when TenBroek was fouled by Brandt.
Glas went to a smaller lineup during the Sioux comeback run, and UND held the Bison to just one field goal, Nemmers' three-pointer with 3:54 to play, in the final 10 minutes.
UND outrebounded the Bison, 39-34, with Jacobson grabbing a career-high nine boards to tie Forbush for game honors. The Sioux shot 45.5 percent from the field (25-of-55), while NDSU shot 39 percent from the field (23-of-59).
Glas, in his 13th year at UND, is now 400-234 (.631) in 23 years as a collegiate head coach. His ledger includes a 245-126 (.660) record in 13 years at UND, an 89-44 record in five years at Minnesota-Morris and a 66-64 record in five years at Willamette (Ore.).
Only one active North Central Conference head coach, MSU-Mankato's Dan McCarrell, has more career wins than Glas. McCarrell came into this season with 562 wins.
