St. Cloud State’s hot shooting beats UND

ST. CLOUD, Minn. — St. Cloud State sophomore guard Forrest Witt scored a season-high 29 points and made 6-of-9 three-pointers to lead the Huskies to an 88-64 win over visiting North Dakota in North Central Conference men’s basketball on Friday at Halenbeck Hall.

St. Cloud State improved to 13-2 overall and 6-2 in the NCC, while UND fell to 13-3 overall and 6-2 in the NCC. It was the third loss in the past three games for the 11th-ranked Sioux.

UND led 11-8 four minutes into the game, but St. Cloud State then held the Sioux scoreless for six-and-a-half minutes and went on a 20-0 run to take a 28-11 lead with 9:19 left in the half. Witt made two three-pointers and scored 10 points during the run.

North Dakota got as close as 13 points on four occasions the rest of the half, but trailed 49-31 at the half.

In the second half, St. Cloud State opened with a 12-4 run in the first 3:45, with Huskies’ center Rado Rancik scoring 11 of the 12 SCSU points during that stretch. That made it 61-35 and the Sioux did not come within 20 points of the Huskies until the final minute.

UND was led by forward Kyle Behrens (Sr., Hayfield, Minn.), who scored 18 points. Sioux forward Jerrid Sebesta (Jr., Montevideo, Minn.) added 11 points. Rancik finished with 14 points and Alex Carlson added 13 for St. Cloud State.

The Huskies shot 55.4 percent from the field for the game (31-of-56), including 11-of-25 (44.0 percent) from three-point range. UND shot 40.4 percent (23-of-57) from the field.

St. Cloud State outrebounded UND, 40-29.

The Sioux will continue play on Saturday at Minnesota State, Mankato. Game time is 8 p.m.
