Jan. 20, 2001 MANKATO, Minn. — MSU, Mankato’s Josh Ziemke scored 20 of his 22 points in the second half to lead the host Mavericks to a 76-70 win over 11th-ranked UND in North Central Conference men’s basketball on Saturday.
UND forward Kyle Behrens (Sr., Hayfield, Minn.) scored a career-high 29 points to lead all players. Sioux forward Tom Jacobson (Sr., Mayville, N.D.) had 19 points and guard Jeff Brandt (Fr., Minot, N.D.) added 15 points.
The loss was the second in a row and third in four games for North Dakota, which fell to 13-4 overall and 6-3 in the NCC. MSU, Mankato upped its mark to 11-6 overall and 4-5 in the NCC.
Both teams shot the ball well in the game, with MSU, Mankato shooting 52.8 percent from the field (28-of-53), while UND shot 50 percent (27-of-54) from the field.
There were five lead changes and five ties in the first half, with the Mavericks holding a 39-33 halftime edge.
In the second half, MSUM led until Jacobson’s jump shot tied the score, 53-53, with 11:04 remaining. UND took its first lead of the second half, 62-60, on a three-pointer by Behrens with 7:25 to play.
After that, the score remained close, with three ties, the last with 1:23 to play (68-68).
MSUM got the lead at 69-68 when Eric Siebrands hit the second of two free throws, and then Ziemke hit a three-pointer and made four free throws down the stretch as the Mavericks held off the Sioux.
In its next game, UND will play host to Northern Colorado at 8 p.m. on Friday.
