GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Freshman guard Jeff Brandt (Minot, N.D.) scored 26 points and senior forward Kyle Behrens (Hayfield, Minn.) scored 24 to lead the 24th-ranked North Dakota men’s basketball team to a 79-63 win over visiting Northern Colorado on Friday.
Brandt’s 26 points matched his career high that he first reached on Dec. 9 against Augustana.
With its win, UND (14-4 overall, 7-3 North Central Conference) moved within one game of both South Dakota State and South Dakota, who share first place in the NCC with 8-2 conference records.
Northern Colorado fell to 8-8 overall and 3-7 in the NCC.
UND jumped out quickly, taking a 22-9 lead with 12:47 to play in the first half. After missing two of their first three shots, the Sioux made nine consecutive field goals during a five-minute stretch.
UND shot a blistering 63 percent from the field (17-of-27) in the first half and led 41-24 at halftime. Northern Colorado shot just 31 percent (9-of-29) from the field in the first half.
The Bears came within nine points (46-37) with 14:39 to play in the game but never seriously threatened the Sioux after that.
UND shot 53.8 percent from the field (28-of-52) for the game, while Northern Colorado shot 38.3 percent (23-of-60) from the field. Jared Ramirez led the Bears with 22 points and made 6-of-11 three-point shots.
The Sioux shot 64.3 percent (9-of-14) from three-point range.
North Dakota will play host to Nebraska-Omaha at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
