GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Sophomore forward Denver TenBroek scored 25 points to lead North Dakota State to an 80-73 win over 16th-ranked North Dakota in North Central Conference men’s basketball at the Hyslop Sports Center on Saturday.
The Bison improved to 13-7 overall and 5-7 in the NCC, while the Sioux fell to 15-5 overall and 8-4 in the NCC. The loss dropped North Dakota two games behind NCC leader South Dakota (11-2 NCC) in the loss column, and one game behind second-place South Dakota State (10-3 NCC) in the loss column.
UND and St. Cloud State are tied for third in the league with 8-4 records.
The key for NDSU on Saturday was its outstanding shooting. The Bison shot 56 percent from the field (28-of-50), 60 percent from three-point range (9-of-15) and 93.8 percent from the foul line (15-of-16).
Meanwhile, the Sioux committed just five turnovers and forced 12 NDSU turnovers but were hurt by shooting just 42.9 percent from the field (27-of-63).
The game was closely contested throughout, with 11 ties and 10 lead changes.
The first half featured six ties and five lead changes. UND’s biggest lead of the half was eight points, while NDSU’s biggest lead was seven points.
Bison point guard Ben Nemmers hit a jump shot with 29 seconds left to break a 32-32 tie, and NDSU led 34-32 at halftime.
In the second half, UND took a 57-56 lead when Tom Jacobson (Sr., Mayville, N.D.) made a layup with 8:52 to play, but NDSU regained the lead 58 seconds later on a TenBroek three-pointer and never trailed again.
The Sioux came close twice in the final minute.
First, a three-point play by point guard Curtis Munlin (Sr., Mishawaka, Ind.) cut the Bison lead to 72-70 with 30 seconds remaining.
NDSU upped its lead to 74-70, though, as Bison guard Scott Majkrzak hit two free throws with 28 seconds left after a foul on UND’s Jeff Brandt (Fr., Minot, N.D.).
After the Bison made it 76-70 on two free throws by forward Marc Forbush with 21 seconds to play, Munlin made a three-pointer to make the score 76-73 with 10 seconds remaining.
The Sioux called a timeout, and Brandt fouled Majkrzak with eight seconds left. Majkrzak, a 92-percent free throw shooter, sunk both shots to make it 78-73. Bison guard Joe Hedin then capped the game with a steal and dunk with one second to play.
UND was led in scoring by Munlin, who scored 23 points in 40 minutes of play. Sioux forward Kyle Behrens (Sr., Hayfield, Minn.) added 22 points for North Dakota, and Jacobson scored 12 points in his first game back after missing two games while recovering from a Jan. 21 appendectomy.
Brandt was held to seven points, 11 below his 18-point conference scoring average coming into the game.
Next on the schedule for North Dakota is Morningside on Friday in Sioux City, Iowa.
