SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Morningside hit six three-pointers in the final nine minutes and 16 three-pointers overall in a 73-53 win over North Dakota in NCC men’s basketball on Friday.
UND fell to 15-6 overall and 8-5 in the NCC, while Morningside improved its record to 15-7 overall and 9-5 in the NCC. It was the fourth loss in the past six games for North Dakota.
The Mustangs’ 16 three-pointers were the most UND has given up in a single game this year. The previous high against the Sioux was 11 by St. Cloud State on Jan. 19. Morningside made 16-of-30 (53.3 percent) from long distance, with nine different players scoring from three-point range.
Morningside’s Matt Schneiderman hit four threes and had a game-high 20 points, while Andrew Drevo and Dusty Wadlington had 13 points each.
Forward Kyle Behrens (Sr., Hayfield, Minn.) led the Sioux with 15 points, and he got his 1,000th career point in the game, becoming the 28th UND player to score 1,000 career points. Behrens now has 1,005 points in his career.
Morningside led just 49-45 with under nine minutes to play, but Drevo hit a three with 8:39 left that was the first of six Mustangs’ threes in the final 8:39. The Mustangs outscored UND 24-8 during that stretch. The key for Morningside was point guard Wadlington’s penetration, as he was successful driving inside and then passing back out for open three-pointers. All of Wadlington’s eight assists came in the second half.
Both teams finished with similar overall shooting numbers, with UND shooting 46.5 percent from the field and Morningside, 46.7 percent. North Dakota was hurt by 18 turnovers, while Morningside committed just five turnovers. The Sioux did not have a steal in the game.
UND guard Jeff Brandt (Fr., Minot, N.D.) had 13 points and forward Tom Jacobson (Sr., Mayville, N.D.) added 10 points. Center Brandon Badding (Jr., Langdon, N.D.) had a team-high eight rebounds for the Sioux, who outrebounded the Mustangs, 30-28.
North Dakota will play at South Dakota at 8 p.m. on Saturday.
