VERMILLION, S.D. — South Dakota’s men’s basketball team used a balanced scoring attack and held visiting North Dakota to its third-lowest shooting percentage of the season in a 68-52 defeat of the Sioux on a cold and drafty night in the Coyotes’ DakotaDome on Saturday.

Paul Marshall, Jimmie Foster and Scott Hansen all had 11 points to lead the sixth-ranked Coyotes (20-3 overall, 13-2 NCC). UND forward Kyle Behrens (Sr., Hayfield, Minn.) led all scorers with 21 points.

The loss was the third in a row and fifth in the last seven games for the Sioux (15-7 overall, 8-6 NCC).

Low temperatures inside the dome caused many spectators to wear jackets during the game, and both teams seemed to feel the effects of the low thermometer readings.

UND held South Dakota to just 37.9 percent field goal shooting, the second-lowest by a Sioux opponent all year, but North Dakota shot even worse (36.5 percent) from the field. The Coyotes held UND sharpshooter Jeff Brandt (Fr., Minot, N.D.) to 3-of-16 shooting from the field (3-of-11 three-pointers) and nine points.

No UND player other than Behrens scored in double figures.

North Dakota scored the first four points of the game on two baskets by Behrens and held South Dakota without a point for the first 4:43 of the game.

The Coyotes got on the board by going on a 19-3 run and led 19-7 with 8:09 to play in the half. UND cut USD’s lead to seven (33-26) at the half when Tom Jacobson (Sr., Mayville, N.D.) hit a jump shot just before the buzzer sounded to end the half.

South Dakota quickly built its lead in the second half, outscoring UND 14-2 in the first 7:30 to build a 47-28 lead.

South Dakota outrebounded UND, 45-30. UND center Brandon Badding (Jr., Langdon, N.D.) had a team-high seven boards for the Sioux. Badding had eight rebounds Friday, giving him 15 for the weekend and marking his best two-game total of the season.

The Sioux forced just nine South Dakota turnovers in the game after forcing only five in Friday’s game against Morningside. The two-game total of 14 is a season low for UND. Until Friday, UND had forced at least 10 turnovers in every game.

North Dakota will try and get back on the winning track on Friday, when it plays host to Minnesota State, Mankato at 8 p.m. The Sioux will take on visiting St. Cloud State on Saturday at 8 p.m.
