SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Augustana’s David Homan broke a 73-73 tie with 25 seconds to play by scoring on a layup and making a free throw after he was fouled to lead the host Vikings to a 77-73 win over North Dakota in North Central Conference men’s basketball on Friday.
Homan scored 15 of his 20 points in the final 10:18, and Augustana overcame a 14-point second-half deficit to win and keep its postseason hopes alive. The Vikings (12-13 overall, 6-11 NCC) would have been eliminated from conference playoff contention had they lost. Now Augustana can get the No. 7 seed in the conference playoff if it beats North Dakota State on Saturday and if South Dakota State finishes in second place in the NCC standings.
North Dakota, which has already clinched a conference playoff berth, dropped to 16-9 overall and 9-7 in the NCC. The loss cost the Sioux a chance to move into fourth place in the NCC standings.
Finishing fourth is important, because the team that finishes fourth will get a home conference playoff game on Tuesday.
But since UND lost, it remained in fifth place and the chance at finishing fourth got much slimmer. Now for UND to move into the fourth spot, the Sioux must beat South Dakota State on Saturday and hope Morningside loses at St. Cloud State. If that happens, UND will finish fourth.
If the Sioux remain in fifth place, they will travel to Sioux City, Iowa, to play Morningside in a first round playoff game on Tuesday. The Sioux could also still finish as low as sixth. That would be the case if UND loses to South Dakota State and MSU, Mankato beats South Dakota on Saturday.
Things appeared to be going UND’s way early in the second half on Friday.
The Sioux were leading Augustana by 14 points (46-32) with 17:06 to play in the game and still led by 12 points (63-51) with 7:15 to play.
The Vikings then went on a 10-2 lead to cut the UND lead to four points (65-61) with 5:15 to play.
The Sioux got their lead back to six (69-63) with 4:01 to play, but Augustana went on an 8-1 run and led, 71-70, with 2:39 left.
A jump shot by UND’s Tom Jacobson (Sr., Mayville, N.D.) gave the Sioux a 72-71 lead with 2:06 left, but Augustana got it back (73-72) with a layup by Shane Burnison with 1:10 to play.
UND’s Kyle Behrens (Sr., Hayfield, Minn.) tied the score at 73-73 by making one of two free throws with 53 seconds left, but then Homan made his game-winning three-point play with 25 seconds left, and the Vikings’ Jon Wagner sealed the victory with a free throw with seven seconds left.
Augustana was led by Homan’s 20 points. Burnison scored 16 points and Wagner added 15 for the Vikings. UND was led by Jeff Brandt (Fr., Minot, N.D.), who scored 22 points.
Other top Sioux scorers were point guard Curtis Munlin (Sr., Mishawaka, Ind.), who netted 14 points, Jacobson, who had 12, and Behrens, who notched 10 for UND.
UND outshot Augustana from the field—49.1 percent to 40.3 percent—but committed 15 turnovers to the Vikings’ nine.
