GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- Senior Kyle Behrens (Hayfield, Minn.) scored 21 points, freshman Jeff Brandt (Minot, N.D.) scored 15 and junior Jerrid Sebesta (Montevideo, Minn.) added 14 points, as the North Dakota mens basketball team (2-1 overall) defeated visiting Bemidji State, 74-64, on Thursday. Senior Mac Smith (Burnsville, Minn.) scored 18 points to lead Bemidji State (1-2 overall).
Bemidji State jumped out to an 8-2 lead and led 22-15 with 8:52 to play in the first half, as Smith scored eight points in the first 9:14. The Sioux then went on an 18-5 run to take a 33-27 halftime lead, with Behrens scoring eight points during that stretch.
The Beavers were still within six at 44-38 with 15:00 to play in the game, but then Brandt hit back-to-back three-pointers and UND made five threes in a 6:19 span to open up a 62-39 lead with 8:01 to play. The Sioux still led by 18 points (68-50) with under four minutes to play, but Bemidji States Sean OHare scored 11 points in the final 3:34 to bring the Beavers within 10 at the end of the game.
The Sioux shot 46.4 percent (26-of-56) from the field and held the Beavers to 38.3 percent (23-of-60) shooting from the field. Bemidji State outrebounded the Sioux 40-32. The Beavers leading rebounders were Greg Halbert and John Szwaja with seven rebounds each, while the Sioux were led by Sebestas six rebounds.
Sioux senior point guard Curtis Munlin (Mishawaka, Ind.) had seven assists and no turnovers and also scored eight points and had four rebounds.
