(Dec. 8, 2000)--GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- UND forward Nigel Jenkins (Jr., Chicago, Ill.) came off the bench and scored a career-high nine points and dished out four assists to spark the UND men's basketball team to a 92-87 comeback victory over South Dakota State on Friday in the North Central Conference opener for both teams.
The Sioux trailed by 10 with 10:40 to play, and that's when Jenkins scored all nine of his points and recorded all four of his assists to lead UND to the win. During that stretch, Jenkins recorded two steals, both of which led directly to baskets. Guard Jeff Brandt (Fr., Minot, N.D.) scored 10 points during those final 10 minutes on four field goals, three of which came on assists from Jenkins.
UND trailed by 10 points (68-58) with just under 11 minutes to play when Jenkins stole the ball and scored his first two points on an off-balance layup to make it 68-60. Later, with SDSU leading 81-79, Jenkins stole the ball and Tom Jacobson (Sr., Mayville, N.D.) scored on a pass from Jerrid Sebesta (Jr., Montevideo, Minn.) to tie the game at 81-81 with 3:28 left.
After SDSU missed a shot, Jacobson hit an open jumper after a pass from Jenkins to give UND an 83-81 lead with 3:10 to play. It was the first UND lead since the Sioux led 2-0, and UND never trailed again.
Jacobson and Brandt each scored a game-high 23 points for North Dakota (6-1 overall, 1-0 NCC), which won its sixth game in a row. Forward Kyle Behrens (Sr., Hayfield, Minn.) added 21 points for the Sioux--his fourth effort of 20 or more points this year. Sebesta and center Brandon Badding (Jr., Langdon, N.D.) each had eight rebounds to lead all players, although the Jackrabbits outrebounded the Sioux, 46-33.
UND shot a season-best 48.4 percent (30-of-62) from the field, while SDSU shot 41.5 percent (27-of-65 from the field. Four Sioux players fouled out, including Jacobson, Brandt, Behrens and Sebesta.
UND broke an eight-game regular season losing streak to SDSU with the win, although the Sioux did defeat the Jacks in the NCAA playoffs last year.
