(Dec. 9, 2000)--GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- UND guard Jeff Brandt (Fr., Minot, N.D.) made 9-of-11 field goals, including 6-of-7 from three-point range, and scored 26 points to lead the Sioux to a 76-63 win over visiting Augustana on Saturday in North Central Conference men's basketball.
It was the seventh straight win for North Dakota (7-1 overall, 2-0 NCC) this season and the 1,300th win overall in school history. The Sioux are just the second NCAA Division II school in history to win 1,300 games. UND, in its 96th season of men's basketball now stands 1,300-788 (.623), just 14 wins shy of all-time Division II leader Central Missouri State, which had a 1,314-803 (.621) mark entering its game Saturday against Lincoln (Mo.) University. Central Missouri is also in its 96th season.
UND's win over Augustana on Saturday came in large part because of hot shooting. The Sioux shot 51.0 percent (25-of-49) from the field and 81.0 percent (17-of-21) from the free throw line. The Vikings, meanwhile, had 14 more field goal attempts than the Sioux but shot just 38.1 percent (24-of-63) from the field. Augustana got to the free throw line just nine times (making eight), as North Dakota committed just 11 fouls in the game. That is a season low for the Sioux, who committed a season-high 27 fouls Friday night in their win over South Dakota State.
UND was ahead by only two points (61-59) with 5:01 to play after Augustana's Sean Hilgenberg scored, but Brandt answered with a three-pointer to increase the Sioux lead to five. Brandt sealed the win with another three-pointer with 1:18 to play to make it 76-63, which ended up to be the final score.
UND forward Kyle Behrens (Sr., Hayfield, Minn.) scored 20 points for the Sioux--his fifth effort of 20 or more points this year--and had a career-high 13 rebounds. North Dakota had the rebounding edge, 37-29, over Augustana. Sioux forward Jerrid Sebesta(Jr., Montevideo, Minn.) had a career-high 10 rebounds in the game.
Sean Hilgenberg led the Vikings with 16 points.
