(Dec. 12, 2000)--GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- North Dakota held Mayville State scoreless for the last eight minutes of the first half and opened up a 23-point halftime lead enroute to an 89-59 win over the visiting Comets on Tuesday in non-conference men's basketball.
The Sioux (8-1 overall) used a balance attack, led by Nigel Jenkins' 14 points, to win their eighth game in a row. Mayville State fell to 7-4 overall with the loss.
UND only led by four points at 19-15 after Mayville State's Craig Olson hit a three-point shot with 8:19 to play in the first half. The Sioux then went on a 19-0 run to lead 38-15 at halftime.
The Comets cut the lead to 18 points (45-27) with 16:41 to play, but within two minutes the Sioux were back up by 25 at 52-27, and Mayville State never made another serious run.
Jenkins (Jr., Chicago, Ill.) hit 5-of-7 field goals, including both of his three-point attempts and both free throw attempts, in scoring a game-high 14 points. He also had three assists and four steals.
Twelve players got in the game for UND, and 11 of them scored. Joining Jenkins in double figures were Kyle Behrens (Sr., Hayfield, Minn.) with 13 points, Ryan Walker (So., Mohall, N.D.) with 11 points and Brandon Badding (Jr., Langdon, N.D.) with 10 points.
Travis Lindgren (So., East Grand Forks, Minn.) led Mayville State with 13 points.
UND outrebounded the Comets, 40-26, as Badding grabbed a game-high seven boards. The Sioux also forced Mayville State into 22 turnovers. UND committed just eight turnovers. UND shot 49.3 percent from the field (35-of-71), while Mayville State shot 41.5 percent (17-of-41).
In its next game, North Dakota will play host to non-conference opponent Northern (S.D.) State on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Hyslop Sports Center.
