(Dec. 16, 2000)--GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- North Dakota forward Tom Jacobson (Sr., Mayville, N.D.) made two free throws with 1.7 seconds on the clock to give UND a 66-64 win over visiting Northern (S.D.) State in non-conference men's basketball on Saturday at the Hyslop Sports Center. UND is now 9-1 overall, while Northern State fell to 4-6.
Northern State was down by nine points (57-48) with 6:40 remaining, but battled back to take a 62-61 lead on a Brad Hansen layup with 1:59 to play. The Sioux tied it at 62-62 on a free throw by point guard Curtis Munlin (Sr., Mishawaka, Ind.) with 1:37 to play but Hansen made two free throws with 1:16 left to make it 64-62 in favor of the Wolves.
UND forward Kyle Behrens (Sr., Hayfield, Minn.) then hit two free throws with 1:01 remaining to tie it 64-64. The drama continued as Munlin stole an errant pass with 38 seconds to play and was fouled on a layup attempt. Munlin missed both foul shots, but on Northern State's next possession, he pressured Wolves' point guard Roland Williams into a five-second violation, giving UND the ball with 28 seconds left. The Sioux held the ball until there were five seconds to play, at which time Jacobson drove from the left side into the lane, where he was fouled by Williams with 1.7 seconds left.
After Jacobson made the go-ahead free throws, Northern State completed a full-court pass, but could not get a shot off before the buzzer sounded to end the game.
Behrens finished as the game's leading scorer with 15 points, including a 7-of-7 performance from the free throw line, and Munlin added 11 points. Sioux forward Jerrid Sebesta (Jr., Montevideo, Minn.) had seven rebounds, tying for game honors with Northern State's Andy Foster. Hansen led Northern State with 14 points.
Northern State shot 50 percent (24-of-48) from the field, while holding the Sioux to 37.5 percent shooting (21-of-56) from the field. The Wolves also outrebounded UND, 36-29. The Sioux, however, forced 18 Northern State turnovers while committing just six turnovers. UND also made 18-of-25 free throws (72 percent), while Northern State got to free throw line just 11 times, making 10.
