Grand Forks, ND - University of North Dakota junior Jerome Beasley, playing is his first North Dakota/North Dakota State game, scored more points than any Fighting Sioux player had in 278 previous meetings between the two rivals as North Dakota dropped North Dakota State 83-79 in front of 5,942 fans at Engelstad Arena on Saturday night. The 6-10 forward was effective from inside and outside, hitting 16-of-26 shots to finish with a season-high 41 points. Beasley also grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds. The previous single-game high versus the Bison was Jon Haaven's 35 points in a 75-71 NDSU victory on Feb. 23, 1957. North Dakota improved to 9-4 with the win, 4-1 in the North Central Conference. The Bison dropped to 7-6, 1-4 in the NCC.
Beasley's 41 points matched the eighth highest single-game scoring total in UND history. Phil Jackson scored 41 points when the Sioux defeated South Dakota State, 85-75, on Jan. 6, 1967, as did Arthur Netcher when North Dakota downed Fosston High School, 65-22, on Dec. 8, 1908. The highest single-game total in UND history was Henry (Doc) O’Keefe's 56 points in the Sioux's 118-5 win over Mayville State on Feb. 15, 1908.
Unlike previous UND games this season when Beasley carried the scoring load early, versus the Bison he scored just four of UND's first 20 points as the Sioux dug themselves an early 10-point deficit. Down 22-12 with 12:43 to play, North Dakota went on an 8-0 run to close the NDSU lead to two, 22-20, with 9:51 remaining. But the Bison answered by scoring the next five points to take a 27-20 lead with 8:49 to play. That was when Beasley started to warm up. A layup at the 8:35 mark pulled UND to within 27-22 and would mark the start of Beasley scoring 14 of UND's final 18 points in the half. North Dakota trailed 43-38 at the break.
Beasley led all scorers with 18 first-half points. Denver TenBroek had 12 to lead NDSU. UND trailed by just five despite being outrebounded in the opening 20 minutes, 30-11. NDSU actually had more offensive rebounds (12) in the first half than UND had total rebounds.
Beasley stayed hot to open the second half, scoring UND's first six points on two jump shots and a dunk that gave the Sioux a 44-43 lead, their first since the 18:22 mark of the first half. At that point Beasley had scored 20 of North Dakota's previous 24 points.
From that point the second-half lead changed hands 14 times.
North Dakota State took its final lead, 72-71, with 5:56 to play. A Ryan Walker basket at the 4:54 mark put UND ahead 73-72. That was followed by a Josh Johnson layup to give UND a 75-72 lead. Three times down the stretch the Bison closed to within one point, but each time UND had an answer.
A TenBroek layup cut the UND lead to 80-79 with 1:20 to play and the Bison regained possession down just a point after UND's Jeff Brandt missed a jumper with 59 seconds to play. After working the clock down to 24 seconds, NDSU's Ben Nemmers missed a 3-point shot from the left corner. Beasley rebounded, was fouled, and hit both free throws to give UND a 82-79 lead.
TenBroek missed a 3-point attempt with 10 seconds to play and NDSU's Scott Majkrzak missed a jump shot five seconds later. Beasley grabbed the rebound, was fouled, and hit one of two free throws to give UND its final margin of victory.
Beasley was the only Sioux to finish in double figures. Mario Porter had eight points and eight assists, Brandt had eight points, while Mike Johnson came off the bench to score seven.
UND hit 15-of-25 second half shots to shoot 60.0 percent. The Sioux shot 51.7 percent for the game, while holding NDSU to 41.5 percent. The Bison held a 45-28 margin on the boards.
TenBroek finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Bison.
North Dakota will be on the road to play at South Dakota and Morningside next weekend.
