Vermillion, SD – A 22-2 run over a 6:34 stretch midway through the second half helped South Dakota to a 78-65 victory over North Dakota in a North Central Conference men’s basketball game on Friday night. South Dakota led by three, 49-46, with 13:05 remaining in the game when the Coyotes went on a 22-2 run to take a commanding 71-48 lead with 6:31 to play. USD freshman Josh Mueller had 13 of his game-high 27 points in the run. North Dakota fell to 9-5, 4-2 in the NCC with the loss. South Dakota improved to 12-3, 4-3 in conference play.
The game appeared like it would be all South Dakota from the opening tip as the Coyotes jumped to an early 13-point lead, 19-6, with 12:51 to play. South Dakota still led 26-13 with 5:25 remaining when UND showed its first sign of offensive life, going on an 11-0 run to cut the lead to two, 26-24, with 2:58 to play. Five different UND players scored baskets in the run. UND trailed by two, 33-31, at the break.
Jeff Brandt had 10 and Jerome Beasley six points and seven rebounds in the first half. Robert Lolar had two points, but had four assists and three steals in just eight first-half minutes.
UND shot 38.2 percent to USD’s 45.2 percent and was outrebounded 22-17.
A Jade Jahner 3-pointer pulled UND to within three, 49-46, with 13:05 to play before Mueller kicked off USD’s game-winning run with a 3-point shot of his own 11 seconds later.
Beasley finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Sioux. It was his sixth straight double double and seventh in his last eight games. Brandt finished with 10 points. Mike Johnson came off the bench to hit 3-of-4 field goals and finish with nine points. No other Sioux player had more than five points for the game.
UND shot 40.0 percent for the game, while USD shot 44.6 percent. The Coyotes held a 43-36 rebounding advantage.
Mueller finished with 27 points, six rebounds, six assists and seven steals to lead South Dakota.
North Dakota is at Morningside, a 79-64 loser to North Dakota State on Friday night, on Saturday night at 8 p.m.
