Omaha, NE - Nebraska-Omaha had five players finish in double figures and hit a number of key shots down the stretch to hold off North Dakota as the Mavericks defeated the Fighting Sioux men’s basketball team, 85-80, on Friday night in Omaha. Junior Jerome Beasley led UND with 19 points. Junior Mario Porter added a season-high 18 points, while junior Robert Lolar had a season-high 16. The Sioux fell to 12-6 overall, 7-3 in North Central Conference play.

The Mavericks opened up a 13-point first-half lead, 24-11, with 8:46 to play, but North Dakota outscored UNO 27-13 the remainder of the half to take a 38-37 lead to the locker room. Nebraska-Omaha opened the second half on another run, this time 16-6, to take a 53-44 lead. Again UND responded, going on a 14-3 run to take a 58-56 lead with 9:03 to play on a Lolar 3-point shot.

From the 9:03 mark until 3:24 remained, the game was as even and as back and forth as a game can be. After UNO tied the score at 58, there were 11 lead changes and neither team had more than a one-point lead until the Mavericks’ Seth Nelson hit a 3-point shot to give UNO a 71-68 advantage. Two Lolar free throws at the 3:02 mark pulled UND to within 71-70 and UNO’s Alvin Mitchell answered to make it 73-70.

Then came the 60-second stretch that determined the outcome.

After a UND turnover, Omaha’s Eddie King, an 11% 3-point shooter for the season, drained a 3-point shot to put the Mavericks up six, 76-70, with 2:22 to go. Another North Dakota turnover followed and again King hit a 3-point shot to make it 79-70 with 1:31 to play.

UND extended the game by fouling and actually had the lead cut to four, 82-78, when sophomore Jeff Brandt hit a 3-pointer with 35 seconds to play, but UNO was solid from the free throw line, hitting four of five the rest of the way to keep the lead. The final points of the game came on Porter’s basket underneath with four seconds to play.

Brandt and senior Nigel Jenkins added nine apiece for the Sioux, who shot 40.3 percent for the game and outrebounded UNO 39-33. Sophomore Josh Johnson and Lolar both had a game-high eight rebounds. Porter finished with seven assists while playing a team-high 32 minutes.

The Sioux are back in action on Saturday night when they play at Northern Colorado.
