Greeley, CO - Northern Colorado had five players reach double figures and scored 51 first- and second-half points to defeat North Dakota, 102-88, in North Central Conference action on Saturday night. North Dakota shot 53.0 percent for the game and had four players finish in double figures, but it was not enough to match the high-powered Bear offense. Junior Jerome Beasley led the Sioux with 23 points as he hit 10 of 16 shots, 2 of 3 from 3-point range. North Dakota lost its second game in a row and fell to 12-7 overall, 7-4 in the NCC.
In the first half, after a close opening eight minutes, Northern Colorado went on runs of 14-4 and 19-1 to take its largest lead, 24 points, at 51-27 with 3:11 to play. But the Sioux battled back, outscoring the Bears 11-0 the rest of the half and went to the locker room down 51-38.
Northern Colorado shot 47.4 percent in the first 20 minutes and hit seven 3-point shots and committed just three turnovers. North Dakota shot 44.1 percent, 4 of 9 from 3-point range, and turned the ball over seven times.
North Dakota stayed within striking distance for most of the second half, but couldn’t make up the difference. Ten times the Sioux cut the UNC double-figure lead to single figures, the closest to seven, 69-62, with 11:29 to play on a sophomore Jeff Brandt 3-point shot, but could get no closer.
A 3-pointer by Beasley at the 4:08 mark brought the Sioux to within eight, 87-79, but UNC answered with a 10-0 run over the next three minutes to put the game away. UNC’s Ari Zandman Zeman hit a 3-point shot with one second remaining to put the Bears over the 100-point mark.
The Bears scored 93 points in their win on Friday over North Dakota State.
Senior Nigel Jenkins came off the bench to score a career-high 16 points, hitting 5 of 7 shots, 4 of 5 from 3-point range. Brandt finished with 14, sophomore Josh Johnson 11 and six rebounds. Junior Robert Lolar finished with six points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Junior Mario Porter hit 4 of 6 shots to finish with eight points and nine assists.
For Northern Colorado, Howard Jackson had 26 points, Aaron Austin 22. Michael Morse finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
The Sioux play again next Saturday at North Dakota State.
