Fargo, ND - After giving up 41 points to North Dakota junior Jerome Beasley in the first meeting between North Dakota and North Dakota State in early January, an 83-79 Sioux victory, the North Dakota State Bison limited Beasley to 10 points and North Dakota to 54 in a 66-54 NDSU victory at the Bison Sports Arena on Saturday night. The loss was the third in a row for North Dakota, a streak which has dropped the Sioux from second place in the North Central Conference to fifth. The Sioux are now 12-8 overall, 7-5 in the NCC. North Dakota State improved to 9-11, 3-9 in league play.
The Bison defense limited not only Beasley, but the entire Sioux offense. UND was held to its lowest point total of the season and fewest made field goals (22). North Dakota shot 37.9 percent for the game, hitting 22-of-58 shots, while NDSU shot 45.5 percent
North Dakota held the lead for much of the first half, including three different five-point leads, but the Bison closed the half on a 13-7 run to take a 27-26 lead to the locker room. NDSU’s Denver TenBroek had 15 of the Bison's 27 first-half points, hitting 6-of-12 field goals, 3-of-7 from 3-point range. Beasley hit 4-of-8 shots to lead the Sioux with eight points.
North Dakota shot 42.9 percent for the half compared to NDSU's 40.0 percent and outrebounded the Bison 20-15.
A steal and a layup by UND junior Mario Porter put the Sioux up 28-27 25 seconds into the second half, but it would be their last lead of the game. NDSU's Ben Nemmers answered with a driving layup at the 19:16 mark to put the Bison back on top, 29-28. That was the start of a 13-4 run that put NDSU up eight, 40-32, and UND wouldn't get closer than six the rest of the way.
When the Sioux did battle back to within six, 51-45, with 6:59 to play, the Bison answered with an 8-0 run over the next five minutes to take their largest lead of the game, 59-45 with 1:40 remaining.
Porter led UND with 16 points, four rebounds and three assists. Beasley added 10 points, while junior Ryan Walker had nine points and a team-high six rebounds. TenBroek led NDSU with 22 points and 11 rebounds, both game highs. Nemmers added 16 points and five assists, while Travis Kraft had 15 points and 10 boards.
North Dakota State shot 52.0 percent in the second half while limiting the Sioux to 33.3 percent shooting. The Bison also held a 20-13 rebounding advantage in the final half.
North Dakota, which is alone in fifth place in the NCC, a half game behind South Dakota and a half game ahead of Northern Colorado, will be at home next weekend to face Morningside and South Dakota.
