GRAND FORKS, ND — Jeff Brandt scored a career-high 32 points, Jerome Beasley added 28 points and the UND men’s basketball team had its best shooting night of the year in an 87-75 win over South Dakota on Saturday at the Hyslop Sports Center.
UND raised its record to 14-5 overall and 9-5 in the North Central Conference. South Dakota fell to 17-6 overall and 9-6 in the NCC. North Dakota is now 7-0 at home in conference play and 11-1 overall at home, with its only loss coming to Division I Kansas.
The Sioux ensured themselves of at least a tie for third in the NCC with their 9-5 league mark, pending the outcome of the St. Cloud State-Northern Colorado game. St. Cloud State could tie UND for third by winning at Northern Colorado.
UND’s win snapped a six-game losing streak to South Dakota, and was the Sioux’s first win over the Coyotes at Hyslop Sports Center since 1997. South Dakota came into the contest having won nine of the last 10 games between the teams in Grand Forks.
The Coyotes led 9-8 after the first 3:25, but Beasley scored six points in an 8-0 Sioux run to give UND a 17-9 lead with 13:05 to play in the half. North Dakota never trailed again.
The Sioux built their lead to 16 points (35-19), but South Dakota cut the lead to seven (39-32) with 3:24 remaining in the half. UND then hit four consecutive three-pointers—two by Brandt, one by freshman Mike Johnson and the last by guard Mario Porter as the first half expired—to stretch its lead to 51-32 at the break. Brandt finished with 19 points in the first half.
The Sioux shot 62.5 percent from the field in the first half (20 of 32), hitting seven of eight three-pointers before intermission. South Dakota shot 44.4 percent from the field (12 of 27) in the first half.
In the second half, UND extended its lead to 60-39 with 16:55 left, and the Coyotes could get no closer than 11 points the rest of the way. The Sioux led 87-69 with 2:30 to play before South Dakota scored the final six points of the game.
UND shot a season-best 54.8 percent from the field (34 of 62) for the game, while South Dakota converted 49.2 percent (29 of 59) of its field goal attempts.
The Sioux outrebounded the Coyotes, 36-28, with Beasley grabbing a game-high 10 boards.
In its next game, UND will play at MSU, Mankato on Friday, before traveling to St. Cloud State the following night.
NOTES--Beasley recorded his eighth double-double of the season and his 14th 20-point game…Porter had 10 assists, tying a personal season best…Brandt made seven three-pointers, tying a personal single-game high that he reached previously in a Dec. 12 win over Duluth…With four conference games remaining, UND has already equaled the number of league wins (nine) that it recorded last year.
