St. Cloud, MN – The University of North Dakota men’s basketball team led St. Cloud State on Saturday night, 56-49, with 12:29 to play, but the Huskies finished the game on a 38-17 run to win 87-73. North Dakota fell to 15-9 overall and into a three-way tie for third place in the North Central Conference with a record of 10-6 with the loss.
North Dakota is tied with St. Cloud State (18-6, 10-6 NCC) and South Dakota (18-6, 10-6 NCC) for third with one weekend of play remaining. South Dakota State sits atop the NCC with a record of 15-1 (21-3 overall), while Nebraska-Omaha (21-7, 12-5 NCC) is in second. The top four finishers in the conference are guaranteed a home game in the NCC Wells Fargo postseason tournament.
Junior Jerome Beasley led North Dakota with 28 points and a team-high eight rebounds. He hit 13 of 21 shots for the game. Sophomore Jeff Brandt had 16 points. No other player had over six points for the Sioux.
St. Cloud State had four players finish in double figures, led by the 17-point performances of BJ Brant and Alex Carlson. Jonny Reese and Jason Kron finished with 16 points apiece, while Kron had a game-high 12 rebounds, seven on the offensive end.
St. Cloud led for a majority of the first half, taking its largest lead at the 4:48 mark, 27-20. But UND came back on a 15-2 run over the next two and a half minutes to go up 35-29 with 2:30 to play. Senior Nigel Jenkins scored all six of his points for the game during the run, while junior Robert Lolar scored five of his six.
St. Cloud finished the half on a 6-2 run to close to within 37-35 at the break.
The Sioux shot 44.8 percent for the first half while holding the Huskies to 36.1 percent. Both teams had four turnovers.
North Dakota expanded its lead to seven, 56-49, with 12:29 to play on a junior Mario Porter jumper before St. Cloud State began its run. After Porter’s jumper, the Sioux went seven straight possessions without scoring, allowing the Huskies to go on a 14-2 run over the next four minutes that turned their seven-point lead into a 63-58 deficit.
Brandt answered for the Sioux with a 3-point shot that closed the gap to 63-61, but the Huskies scored on their next eight possessions to take a commanding 80-67 to lead with 2:48 to play. North Dakota would only get within nine points the rest of the way.
St. Cloud State came back to shoot 62.1 percent in the second half while the Sioux improved to 51.7 percent for the half. The Huskies finished the game shooting 47.7 percent, while UND shot 48.3 percent. SCSU won the rebounding battle, 38-28, including 15 offensive rebounds.
North Dakota completes its regular season next weekend at home when the Sioux host Augustana and league-leading South Dakota State.
