Sioux use hot shooting to down Augustana 88-60

Grand Forks, ND – The University of North Dakota men's basketball team shot 55.3 percent in the first half to jump to a 48-27 halftime lead over Augustana on Friday night, then shot 51.4 percent in the second half to roll to a 88-60 victory. With the win the Sioux assured themselves of a home game next Tuesday in the opening round of the North Central Conference Wells Fargo Finals.

UND is now 16-9, 11-6 in the NCC. South Dakota State, which North Dakota hosts on Saturday night, is atop the standings at 15-2 after losing, 91-83, at North Dakota State on Friday. Nebraska-Omaha, which is in second at 12-5, hosts Northern Colorado tomorrow afternoon. The Sioux are tied with South Dakota and St. Cloud State for third at 11-6, but USD and SCSU face each other tomorrow night.

Against the Vikings, North Dakota got 17 points from junior Jerome Beasley and 10 from sophomore Jeff Brandt in the first half to jump out to a 48-27 halftime lead. The Sioux hit 21 of 38 shots to shoot 55.3 percent, while limiting Augustana to 38.7 percent. UND also controlled the boards, grabbing 25 to AC's 14. UND had nine offensive rebounds in the first half.

Augustana cut the UND lead to 17, 56-39, with 14:36 to play in the second half, but the Sioux responded by scoring the next 14 points to stop any Viking rally. Senior Nigel Jenkins had five points in the spurt, Beasley four.

The North Dakota lead grew as large as 39 points, 81-42, with 6:45 to play, before Augustana closed the game on an 18-7 run to make the final score 88-60.

Beasley finished with a game-high 23 points and grabbed six rebounds. Brandt finished with 14 points and also had five rebounds and five assists. Jenkins came off the bench to score 12 points on 5 of 6 shooting in 14 minutes of action. He also had five assists. Junior Robert Lolar was the fourth Sioux player to reach double figures, finishing with 10.

Eleven players scored in all for North Dakota. Sophomore Josh Johnson, who had nine points and eight rebounds, and freshman Mike Johnson, who finished with seven points, were the only other players to score over four points.

Sean Hilgenberg led Augustana with 16 points and nine rebounds.

The Sioux held a 44-33 advantage on the boards and had 27 assists versus 14 turnovers.

North Dakota hosts #9 South Dakota State, the top-ranked team in the North Central Region, on Saturday night at 8 p.m.
