Minot, ND - The University of North Dakota men's basketball team was defeated by Minot State on Tuesday night in Minot, 80-76. The Beavers shot just 36.4 percent from the floor for the game, but shot an amazing 50 free throws in the contest, of which they hit 43. North Dakota attempted only 15 free throws. The loss dropped UND to 1-1 on the season.
In the early going it appeared the Sioux would run away with the game. UND jumped out to an 11-0 lead and employed a suffocating man-to-man defense that didn't allow MSU to even get a shot attempt until 16:28 remained in the half. The Beavers first basket didn't come until the 13:40 mark.
But Minot State slowly got back into the game, evening the score for the first time at 24. UND led 32-31 at the break.
In the second half it was a steady march to the free throw line for Minot State, particularly in the final 11 minutes. With 11 minutes to play, UND led 46-44, but Minot State would score on 19 of its final 21 possessions of the game. Those possessions included four made field goals and 28 of 30 from the free throw line.
The Sioux did what they could down the stretch to come back, but Minot State hit all 12 of its free throws in the final minute to keep UND at bay. Senior Nigel Jenkins and sophomore Jeff Brandt combined to hit three 3-point shots in the final 25 seconds. Brandt's 3-pointer drew UND within two, 78-76, with six seconds to play, but MSU's Kent Bloms hit two free throws with 5.9 seconds to play to produce the final margin of victory.
UND shot 44.3 percent for the game, making 11 more field goals than the Beavers, but were whistled for 32 personal fouls to Minot State's 12. Minot State shot 86.0 percent from the free throw line for the game, 90.6 percent in the second half.
UND was led by Brandt's 22 points. Jenkins was the only other Sioux in double figures with 11. Juniors Ryan Walker and Jerome Beasley both scored eight points. Senior Jarrid Sebesta grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds, while junior point guard Mario Porter had seven points for UND, while dishing out seven assists and committing just one turnover.
UND will be back in action on Friday night when the Sioux travel to Bemidji State. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
