Bemidji, MN – Junior Jerome Beasley (Moreno Valley, Calif.) scored 25 points on 10-of-13 shooting to lead the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux to a 89-78 victory over Bemidji State on Friday night. Beasley was one of four UND players to finish in double figures. Joining Beasley in double figures were sophomore Jeff Brandt (Minot, N.D.) with 19, junior Robert Lolar (Wichita, Kan.) with 14 and junior Ryan Walker (Mohall, N.D.) with 12.
UND improved to 2-1 on the season with the victory.
Beasley scored 12 points in the first six minutes of the game as UND opened up an early six-point lead, 19-13. The first-half lead grew to as much as 17, 48-31, with 4:33 to play when sophomore Jade Jahner (Fargo, N.D.) hit two free throws, but Bemidji State closed the half on a 9-2 run to close to within 50-40 at the break.
UND scored the first seven points of the second half on baskets by Beasley, Walker and Lolar to increase its lead to 57-40, but the Sioux couldn't shake the Beavers. BSU scored the next eight points to close within nine, 57-48, with 17:10 to play. The lead would remain between seven and 14 until Bemidji State narrowed the lead to six, 84-78, with 31 seconds to play on a layup by Larry Richards. But Brandt hit two free throws and Bemidji State missed a 3-point shot on its next possession to secure the Sioux victory. Walker hit two free throws with five seconds remaining to give North Dakota its final 11-point margin of victory.
Jahner came off the bench to score seven points, on 7-of-7 shooting from the free throw line. No other Sioux player had more than five points. Walker grabbed a team-high seven rebounds while junior Mario Porter (Chicago, Ill.) dished out a team-hit six assists.
The Sioux shot 52.6 percent for the game, compared to BSU's 43.3 percent, and outrebounded the Beavers 37-27. UND also shot 91.7 percent from the free throw line, hitting 22-of-24 attempts.
The Sioux will next be in action on Wednesday when UND hosts MSU-Moorhead at 7 p.m. at Hyslop Sports Center.
