Brookings, SD - The Fighting Sioux men’s basketball team dropped its North Central Conference opener on Friday night at South Dakota State, 94-77. With the loss, UND falls to 3-2, 0-1 in the NCC. SDSU improved to 5-2, 1-0 in conference play.
South Dakota State jumped out to a 3-0 lead on an Austin Hansen 3-point shot just 12 seconds into the game. North Dakota answered with baskets by junior Mario Porter and Robert Lolar to take a 4-3 lead, but that would be the Sioux’s only lead of the game. Down just three, 29-26, with 5:21 to play in the half after shot underneath by UND sophomore Josh Johnson, SDSU closed the half on a 17-6 run to go to the locker room up 46-32.
The Sioux shot 37.1 percent in the first half to the Jacks’ 43.8 percent, but South Dakota State hit 15-of-18 attempts at the free throw line while UND hit 5-of-5.
The Jacks used the momentum they gained just before half to score the first 10 points of the second half to go up 56-32 with 17:44 to play. The SDSU lead remained between 21 and 28 points until the final minute when a basket by freshman Todd Rypkema and two freshman Jared Wells free throws cut the final lead to 17, 94-77.
South Dakota State hit 65.5 percent (19-29) of its shots in the second half while holding the Sioux to 30.8 percent. The Jacks outrebounded North Dakota 50-32.
UND was led by Porter and junior Jerome Beasley, who each scored 12 points. Lolar finished with nine, while freshman Mike Johnson had eight and senior Nigel Jenkins seven. Johnson and junior Ryan Walker led UND in rebounding with six apiece.
UND hit 22-of-24 free throws (.917) for the night. The Sioux had a team free throw shooting percentage going into the game of 82.8 percent.
UND will play at Augustana on Saturday night in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Vikings dropped to 5-2 on the year, 0-1 in the NCC, when they lost to North Dakota State on Friday night, 101-80.
