Sioux Falls, SD – The University of North Dakota men's basketball team evened its North Central Conference record at 1-1 with a 63-59 victory at Augustana on Saturday night. The Sioux used a strong defensive effort that limited the Vikings to 35.8 percent shooting and the play of sophomore Josh Johnson, who had career highs with 13 points and seven rebounds in 31 minutes off the bench, to improve to 4-2 overall.

Augustana got off to a 4-0 lead in the opening 45 seconds of the game, but North Dakota quickly came back to tie the score at four on two baskets by junior Jerome Beasley. The 4-4 tie would be the first of seven first-half ties. After a jumper by Beasley tied the score at 24 with 3:41 to play, UND scored the next four points on baskets by Johnson and Beasley and took a 30-27 lead to the locker room.

Beasley led UND with 12 first-half points on 6-of-9 shooting. Augustana's Sean Hilgenberg had 18 of the Vikings' 27 first-half points, hitting 7-of-8 field goals, including two 3-point baskets.

A 3-point shot by Augustana's Matt Wilber tied the score at 30 on Augustana's first possession of the second half, but a surge by North Dakota put it up 41-34 on a three-point play by Johnson with 12:40 to play and the Sioux seemed to be taking command. But the Vikings scored the next 12 points over a three-minute stretch to go up 46-41 with 9:58 to play. A layup by UND junior Ryan Walker and three free throws by Beasley tied the score at 46 with 8:53 to play.

After two free throws by AC's Justin Vortherms gave the Vikings a 53-51 lead with 2:54 to play, North Dakota sophomore Jeff Brandt came down and hit a 3-point shot to give UND a 54-53 lead. UND would keep the lead the rest of the way.

A three-point play by senior Nigel Jenkins, who took the inbounds pass against the Augustana full-court pressure at one end line and dribbled the length of the court for a layup and a foul, gave the Sioux a 57-53 lead with 2:01 to play. UND would hit 6-of-8 free throws in the final 1:32 to put the game away.

Beasley finished with a team-high 20 points and seven rebounds. Brandt and Johnson had 13, while Jenkins had five. Junior Mario Porter finished with four points, five assists, three rebounds and two steals. Hilgenberg finished with 25 points and 14 rebounds for Augustana, which fell to 5-3 overall, 0-2 in the NCC.

The Sioux shot only 39.0 percent, but held the Vikings to 35.8 percent shooting and forced Augustana into 23 turnovers.

UND will host Minnesota-Duluth on Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Hyslop Sports Center.
