Grand Forks, ND – Junior Jerome Beasley scored 20 of North Dakota's first 23 points, sophomore Jeff Brandt scored UND's final 14 points in regulation and the two combined to score 12 of the Sioux's 16 points in overtime as the Fighting Sioux men's basketball team defeated Minnesota-Duluth in overtime on Wednesday night at Hyslop Sports Center, 67-54.
In the game's opening half, it appeared as if Beasley and the Sioux were going to take control of the game and go on to an easy victory. Beasley scored 20 first-half points – 20 of the Sioux's first 23 – and the Sioux held the Bulldogs to 20.0 percent shooting while taking a 32-17 halftime lead.
Beasley hit 9-of-11 first-half shots and grabbed seven rebounds. Senior Nigel Jenkins was the next highest scorer with five points.
But UMD came out in the second half and went on a 17-0 run in the opening six minutes to take its first lead of the game, 34-32, with 14:32 to play. With the Bulldogs rallying and UMD paying closer attention to Beasley, Brandt took over for the Sioux down the stretch to get them to overtime. Shut out in the opening 33 minutes of the game, Brandt, who came into the game averaging 16.3 points per game, scored North Dakota's final 14 points in the final 6:56.
Minnesota-Duluth tied the score at 51 with 1:33 to play in regulation on two free throws by Jake Nettleton. Both teams would miss opportunities to take the lead on ensuing possessions, with the Bulldogs missing a shot with 15 seconds to play. After a timeout with nine seconds to play, UND got the ball to Beasley for the potential game-winning shot, but the 15-foot shot from the baseline was just short.
In overtime it was all Brandt, Beasley and the Sioux. After Beasley scored on a three-point play, UMD answered with a free throw by Jason Schneeweis to make it 54-52. Brandt then hit three 3-pointers during a 1:35 stretch while the Sioux defense held UMD scoreless to take a 63-52 lead. UND would go on to win 67-54.
After missing his first 10 shots, Brandt hit seven of his final 12, all seven 3-point shots, to finish with 23 points in the final seven minutes of regulation and five minutes of overtime. Beasley, after scoring 20 points in the game's opening 16 minutes, finished with 23 points, hitting 10-of-16 shots and grabbing 16 rebounds in 39 minutes of play.
Junior point guard Mario Porter finished with five points and seven assists (versus just one turnover).
Chris Stanley had 24 points for UMD, while Schneeweis had 16 points and 16 rebounds.
North Dakota shot 35.7 percent and held UMD to 33.3 percent shooting. The Bulldogs won the rebounding battle, 48-45.
