Grand Forks, ND – The University of North Dakota men's basketball team used another strong performance from junior Jerome Beasley to post an 80-60 victory over Minnesota-Crookston in the Sioux's first game at Engelstad Arena on Friday night in Grand Forks. The 6-10 forward hit 12-of-18 shots and finished with 27 points and 13 boards. Up next for the Sioux is the long-awaited meeting with #3 Kansas at Engelstad Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Beasley scored five early points as UND jumped out to a 13-7 lead just 6:27 into the game. The North Dakota first-half lead would continue to grow, reaching 17 points, 36-19, with 2:57 to play. But UMC closed the half on a 9-3 run to cut the halftime lead to 35-28.
Beasley had 15 points at the break. No other UND player had more than five. UND held UMC to 30.8 percent shooting and forced 13 first-half turnovers.
Minnesota-Crookston would never get the second-half lead into single figures. After UMC got within 13, 55-42, UND answered with a 9-0 run to take a 64-42 lead with 7:46 to play, putting the game out of reach.
Sophomore Jeff Brandt scored in double figures with 16 points. Sophomore Josh Johnson had eight points and nine rebounds. Junior Ryan Walker had seven points and six rebounds, while senior Nigel Jenkins had seven points and five rebounds.
The sold out Kansas game will be UND’s final game before the holiday break. UND will host NCC foes Northern Colorado and Nebraska-Omaha on Dec. 29 and 30, both games beginning at 8 p.m.
