FARGO, N.D. - Forward Jenny Boll (So., Crookston, Minn.) scored 16 points and grabbed a career-high 19 rebounds to lead third-ranked North Dakota to a 70-61 win over seventh-ranked North Dakota State in North Central Conference women's basketball on Saturday at the Bison Sports Arena.
Boll had six offensive rebounds and 13 defensive boards as the Sioux outrebounded the Bison, 49-25. UND center Janel Palbicki (Sr., Bloomington, Minn.) came off the bench to add 10 rebounds in 14 minutes of playing time.
Joining Boll in double-figure scoring for the Sioux were Theresa LeCuyer (Sr., Anoka, Minn.), who scored 17 points to lead UND, point guard Tonia Jones (Sr., Thompson, N.D.) with 13 points, and Palbicki, who added 10 points.
UND raised its record to 13-0 overall and 5-0 in the NCC, while NDSU had a five-game winning streak snapped and fell to 13-3 overall and 3-2 in the NCC. The Sioux are the only undefeated team remaining in the NCC, and in the conference race they now have a two-game lead in the loss column over South Dakota State (4-2), North Dakota State (3-2), St. Cloud State (3-2) and MSU, Mankato (3-2).
The game began with both teams struggling to find their shooting touch. During the first four minutes of the game, UND made just one of 11 field goal attempts. NDSU made just one of five from the field during the same stretch. The score was still two 2-2 more than four minutes into the game until Bison forward Amanda Gehrke hit a three-point basket to make it 5-2 NDSU at the 15:51 mark. Gehrke finished with a game-high 19 points.
UND led 15-14 with 10:51 to play in the first half, but the Sioux then went on a 10-0 run over the next two minutes to build a 25-14 lead. UND led by 12 points (36-24) with under a minute to play in the half, but NDSU scored four points in the final 30 seconds to cut UNDs lead to 36-28 at halftime.
In the second half, a basket by UND's Becky Moen (So., Morris, Minn.) with 15:59 to play gave the Sioux a 10-point lead at 42-32, and the Bison never got closer than that the rest of the way. UND led by as many as 17 points in the final 10 minutes.
Both teams committed 22 turnovers during the game, and both squads were whistled for 21 fouls. UND made 21-of-28 free throws (75 percent), while NDSU made 8-of-15 (44.4 percent. The Bison had a slight edge in field goal shooting (44.4 percent to 41.1 percent for the Sioux). NDSU hit 24-of 54 shots from the field, while UND made 23-of-56 field goal tries.
Boll's 19 rebounds tied her for the third-best single-game rebounding mark in Sioux women's basketball history. Only Jenny Crouse (1995-99) has ever gotten more rebounds in a single game. Crouse had 26 in a 77-59 UND win at Augustana on Jan. 23, 1999 and 22 in a 79-69 win over Northern Michigan on March 19, 1998.
Prior to Crouse and now Boll, only two other UND players ever had 19 rebounds in a single game. Laurie Bakke had 19 in a 63-61 loss to Concordia on Jan. 29, 1980, and Pam Solseth did it twiceon back-to-back nights. Solseth had 19 in a 51-48 loss to Minnesota-Morris on Dec. 16, 1977 and 19 in a 71-52 win over North Dakota State on Dec. 17, 1977. Incidentally, both of Solseth's big games came at NDSU in the 1977 North Dakota State Invitational.
UNDs 13-0 record is its fourth-best start under Gene Roebuck. The Sioux's best-ever start was 18-0 in 1998-99, when UND went on to a 31-1 record and the NCAA Division II championship. The Sioux started 17-0 in 1990-91, and finished 28-2 that year after losing in the NCAA North Central Region final. In 1987-88, UND got off to a 15-0 start before finishing 22-6. That year the Sioux season ended with a loss in the NCAA North Central Region first round game.
In its next game, North Dakota will be looking for its 14th win at 6 p.m. Friday against South Dakota at the Hyslop Sports Center.
