GRAND FORKS, N.D.—A trio of UND seniors scored in double figures to lead the second-ranked Sioux to a 94-52 win over Morningside in NCC women’s basketball on Saturday at the Hyslop Sports Center.
Leading the way for UND was Theresa LeCuyer (Sr., Anoka, Minn.) with 18 points. Mandy Arndtson (Sr., Austin, Minn.) scored 17 points and Jenny Hoffner (Sr., Brooklyn Park, Minn.) scored 15 for North Dakota (15-0, 7-0).
Erica Thein led Morningside (3-13, 0-8) with 12 points.
The win was UND’s 25th consecutive over Morningside dating back to 1987. The Sioux, 8-0 at home this season, have now won 12 straight home contests dating back to last season. UND is 53-2 at home over the past four seasons.
The game was close for most of the first half, with UND leading 27-18 with less than six minutes to play. A 13-6 run over the final 5:23 upped the Sioux’s halftime lead to 40-24.
UND made seven of its first eight shots of the second half and shot a blistering 62.9 percent from the field overall. The Sioux had a 14-0 burst midway through the half that upped their lead to 65-32 with 10:47 to play.
Arndtson and Hoffner each scored 10 points in the second half to spark the UND surge.
Arndtson made 6-of-8 shots from the field in the game, including 2-of-3 three-pointers and all three of her free throw attempts.
Arndtson’s performance concluded a hot weekend of shooting. In UND’s two games, she hit 13-of-16 shots from the field (81.2 percent), 4-of-6 three pointers (66.7 percent) and all nine of her free throw attempts. She scored 35 points in the two games.
North Dakota shot 52.7 percent from the field (39-of-76) for the game, while Morningside shot just 37.5 percent (21-of-56). The Mustangs were hurt by 31 turnovers, while UND committed 19 turnovers.
Morningside outrebounded the Sioux, 39-38, with the Mustangs’ Trish Martin grabbing a game-high 10 boards. LeCuyer and Arndtson each had seven rebounds to lead UND.
In its next action, UND will travel to St. Cloud State and Minnesota State, Mankato for games next Friday and Saturday (Jan. 19-20).
