GRAND FORKS, N.D. — The UND women’s basketball team defeated visiting Northern Colorado, 64-56, on Friday despite having its worst shooting night of the season.
The Sioux (17-1 overall, 9-1 North Central Conference) shot just 30.8 percent from the field (20-of-65) and 52.8 percent from the free throw line (19-of-36), both season single-game lows. Northern Colorado (8-10, 3-7) shot 40 percent from the field (20-of-50).
UND compensated for its shooting slump by committing a season-low seven turnovers while forcing Northern Colorado into 27 turnovers.
Forward Mandy Arndtson (Sr., Austin, Minn.) and point guard Tonia Jones (Sr., Thompson, N.D.) each scored 14 points to lead the Sioux. Jenny Boll (So., Crookston, Minn.) added 12 points for UND.
Arndtson now has 997 career points and with three more points will become the 18th Sioux player to score 1,000 career points.
Northern Colorado’s Missy Borell scored a game-high 15 points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds. The Bears outrebounded the Sioux, 50-38.
Despite shooting just 20.6 percent from the field (7-of-34) in the first half, UND led 20-12 with 9:20 to play. Northern Colorado then went on a 14-0 run over the next six minutes to take a 26-20 lead. The Sioux missed seven shots from the field during that stretch, while the Bears were 6-of-12 from the field during the same time period.
Northern Colorado led 28-26 at the half.
In the second half, the Bears were up, 31-29, until a jumper by Sioux forward Theresa LeCuyer (Sr., Anoka, Minn.) tied it with 17:38 to play. LeCuyer then gave UND the lead, 33-31, with a layup 28 seconds later and the Sioux never trailed again.
UND will play host to Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday at 5 p.m.
