GRAND FORKS, N.D. — The third-ranked North Dakota women’s basketball team trailed No. 8 North Dakota State 41-28 with 16:30 remaining in Friday’s game, but the Sioux outscored the Bison 45-26 the rest of the way to pull out a hard-fought 73-67 win in North Central Conference women’s basketball.
North Dakota is now 19-1 overall and 11-1 in the NCC, while North Dakota State fell to 19-4 overall and 9-3 in the NCC. The Sioux remained in first place in the conference standings and have a two-game lead over second-place NDSU and Augustana, both of which have 9-3 conference marks.
It was the 15th consecutive home win for the Sioux, who scored 50 second-half points.
UND forward Theresa LeCuyer (Sr., Anoka, Minn.) scored 15 of her game-high 20 points in the second half, and Sioux forward Mandy Arndtson (Sr., Austin, Minn.) scored all 14 of her points in the final 13:26 to spark the Sioux comeback.
NDSU led 45-33 with 14:20 to play, but UND went on a 9-0 run in two minutes to cut the margin to 45-42. Arndtson scored her first five points of the game during that stretch.
The Bison got their lead back up to six at 53-47, but UND went on a 12-4 run to take a 59-57 lead with 5:31 left.
Two free throws by NDSU forward Jaime Berry tied it at 62-62 with 3:18 to play, but back-to-back layups by LeCuyer and Sioux point guard Tonia Jones (Sr., Thompson, N.D.) gave UND the lead for good.
Jones finished with 14 points, tying her season high. UND forward Becky Moen (So., Morris, Minn.) came off the bench to score nine points—seven in the second half—in 23 minutes. Sioux center Jenny Boll (So., Crookston, Minn.) also had nine points, and like Moen, she scored seven in the second half.
UND guard Megan Pick (So., Annandale, Minn.) did not score, but came off the bench and played a solid floor game. Pick grabbed a rebound and recorded an assist in seven minutes of playing time in the second half after not playing in the first half.
UND’s aggressive defense made it tough for NDSU to score late in the game. The Bison made just two of 11 field goal attempts in the last five minutes of the game.
In the first half, North Dakota struggled offensively, shooting just 31 percent from the field (9-of-29). Meanwhile, the Bison shot 43.8 percent from the field (14-of-32) and took a 34-23 lead into the locker room at the break.
LeCuyer and Arndtson tied for game rebounding honors with 10 boards each. Both players were particularly effective in crunch time, with LeCuyer grabbing eight of her 10 rebounds in the second half and Arndtson grabbing six of her 10 in the final 13:26.
It was the second straight 20-point game and the ninth of the season for LeCuyer, who played a season-high 36 minutes. LeCuyer posted her 12th double-double of the year with her 20 points and 10 rebounds.
Arndtson has now scored 14 points in three consecutive games, and her 14-point, 10-rebound effort was her second double-double of the season.
NDSU’s Amanda Gehrke led the Bison with 16 points, while Jaye Amundson scored 15 and Berry, 14 points.
In its next game, North Dakota will play Morningside in Sioux City, Iowa, on Feb. 9. The Sioux will then take on South Dakota in Vermillion, S.D., on Feb. 10.
