SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — If the North Dakota women’s basketball team is to win the North Central Conference title outright, it will have to wait at least one more night.

Host Augustana used the best shooting night by any team in the NCC this season to beat UND, 94-77, on Friday. UND is now 22-3 overall and 14-3 in the NCC. Augustana improved to 18-7 overall and 12-5 in the NCC while snapping a seven-game losing streak to the Sioux.

The Vikings shot a blistering 59.4 percent from the field (19-of-32) in the first half enroute to opening up a 48-27 halftime lead. Amazingly, Augustana actually improved its shooting in the second half, connecting on a remarkable 68.2 percent (15-of-22) of its field goal attempts.

The Vikings finished with a 63.0 field goal percentage (34-of-54) on the night, which bettered the previous NCC season high of 59.7 percent (also by Augustana in a game against Morningside).

Augustana’s incredible shooting offset a solid second half by the Sioux, who outscored Augie, 50-46, after intermission. UND shot 57.6 percent from the field (19-of-33) in the second half after only converting 39.3 percent (11-of-28) of its first-half field goal attempts.

UND led 7-6 and only trailed 17-13 seven minutes into the game. Augustana then went on an 11-2 run and later had a 12-6 run enroute to its 21-point halftime lead.

The Vikings outscored the Sioux 15-10 at the beginning of the second half to increase the lead to 26 points (63-37).

UND began chipping away at the lead and actually cut it to 12 points (82-70) with 3:39 left. The deficit was too much to overcome, however, and the Vikings outscored the Sioux, 12-7, in the final 3:10.

Augustana used a balanced scoring effort, with five players scoring in double figures. The Vikings were led by Tamera Oltmanns’ 19 points, with Nicole Tendler adding 15, Charissa Sheppard, 14, Brittani Janssen, 12, and Tresse Klumper, 10.

Jenny Boll (So., Crookston, Minn.) led UND with a career-high 25 points. Becky Moen (So., Morris, Minn.) had 14 for the Sioux. UND’s Theresa LeCuyer (Sr., Anoka, Minn.) had 11 points, all in the second half, and Mandy Arndtson (Sr., Austin, Minn.) chipped in with 10 points.

The Sioux now have a one-game lead in the NCC race over second-place North Dakota State (13-4 NCC), which defeated South Dakota State, 92-90, in Brookings, S.D., on Friday. North Dakota, which already has a share of the NCC regular season championship, can clinch the title outright with a win in its regular season finale on Saturday at South Dakota State.

If UND loses to South Dakota State, North Dakota State could tie UND for the league title by beating Augustana on Saturday.

No matter what happens, UND will have a bye for the first round of the conference playoffs, as the Sioux defeated the Bison twice during the regular season. UND will play host to the semifinal and final rounds of the league playoffs (the Wells Fargo Finals) on Friday and Saturday at the Hyslop Sports Center in Grand Forks.

Friday’s loss to Augustana marked just the seventh time in Gene Roebuck’s 14 years that UND has given up 90 or more points in a game.

Augustana's 94 points were the second-most given up by the Sioux under Roebuck. The only time the Sioux have given up more, they actually won, defeating Nebraska-Omaha 102-96, in 1987-88, Roebuck’s first season.

The 17-point loss was not, however, UND’s worst at Augustana. The Sioux have gotten beat worse by the Vikings on two occasions. UND lost to Augustana by 23 points (90-67) in 1992-93 and by 21 points (91-70) in 1989-90.

It was the fourth time under Roebuck that the Sioux have lost at Augustana, and the Vikings have scored 90 or more points in all of those games.

UND will play at South Dakota State on Saturday at 6 p.m.
