UND beats St. Cloud State, 107-97, in three overtimes

GRAND FORKS, N.D.- North Dakota’s Jenny Hoffner (Sr., Brooklyn Park, Minn.) scored a career-high 23 points to lead seventh-ranked North Dakota to a 107-97 win over visiting St. Cloud State in three overtimes Friday in the first semifinal game of the Wells Fargo Finals North Central Conference women’s basketball championships.

UND’s Jenny Boll (So., Crookston, Minn.) scored seven points in the third overtime, and the top-seeded Sioux (24-3, 15-3 NCC) went on an 11-0 run to start the final period enroute to outscoring the fourth-seeded Huskies (20-8, 12-6) by a 16-6 margin in the final period.

In regulation, St. Cloud State overcame a nine-point UND lead with 5:18 left to send the game into overtime. The Huskies’ Jessica Abrahams (So., Detroit Lakes, Minn.) scored 12 of her 23 points in the final 5:18 of regulation, including a 3-pointer with six seconds remaining that tied the game, 76-76, and sent it into overtime.

The Huskies grabbed an 80-76 lead in the first overtime, but UND’s Theresa LeCuyer (Sr., Anoka, Minn.) scored on successive layups to tie it, 80-80, and after St. Cloud State grabbed an 82-80 lead, LeCuyer scored on another layup to tie it, 82-82, with 1:21 to play and that’s how the first overtime ended.

In the second overtime, the Sioux led 91-89 in the final minute, but St. Cloud State’s Nicole Persby (Jr., North St. Paul, Minn.) scored on a layup with 23 seconds left to tie it, 91-91. LeCuyer missed a potential game-winning shot with two seconds to play, sending the game into a third overtime.

St. Cloud State’s Tina Schreiner (Jr., Cold Spring, Minn.) led all scorers with a season-high 30 points and also had 15 rebounds, tying for game honors with UND’s Mandy Arndtson (Sr., Austin, Minn.), who also grabbed 15 rebounds and scored 21 points.

Schreiner played 53 out of 55 minutes, and Persby played 52 minutes.

Persby and Christine Williamson (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn.) each scored 13 points for St. Cloud State, and UND’s Becky Moen (So., Morris, Minn.) tied a career high with 21 points. LeCuyer added 14 points for the Sioux, and Boll scored 13 points.

North Dakota, the league’s regular season champion, will play in the tournament championship game at 7 p.m. Saturday against No. 3 seed North Dakota State.

The winner of Saturday’s championship gets an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament.
